Hey PEAteacher, i have yet another question!
the required calculator, or the calculator that exeter likes students to use, is the ti-89 so my question is: is you are on financial aid, does the calculator get covered? and is it available to buy anywhere on campus or are students expected to have it before they arrive on campus?

I’m quite sure you can get it on campus. Financial aid might cover it depending on what kind of aid you get; you need to inquire with the Financial Aid office about that.

Is the TI-89 used in non-calculus classes? And would it be fine for us to use the TI-89 instead of the TI-89 Titanium?

Gabii: Check ebay–if you’re patient and keep bidding, you can get a great deal–I just bought a used Titanium there for $68.

I don’t know the details about calculators. You may want to double-check with the Chair of the Math Department, Mr. Hardej.

It’ll be REALLY helpful to have a TI-89 from the beginning. Some teachers, even for algebra and geometry, like using some of the functions that are only offered on the TI-89. Some students have a TI-84, but it causes issues when teachers demonstrate graph functions and things like that. It’s a huge investment, but if you’re careful not to lose it you’ll use it every day at Exeter and probably through college, too!

I’m on financial aid and part of my package is a term-by-term budget for the bookstore. With all the textbooks that I have to purchase in the fall, I wasn’t able to buy a TI-89 while staying within the budget Exeter offers. Luckily, I have a birthday in the summer and my parents were able to buy the calculator for me (dorky, I know), but make sure you look on Ebay and Craigslist for used calcs. Your middle school teachers may have a few, too.

i know that i shoudn’t be asking this for now (due to the fact that i not even applied yet) but, just for curiosity: if i have insomnia and somnambulism problems, can the school arrange a single room for me?

There are always new students who get singles for no particular reason other than expressing a preference; if you have documented health issues that would make it necessary for you to be in a single, I’m quite sure you’d be able to get one.

thank you i have no documents yet, but i can get it from my doctor.
how do teachers lead with racism/sexism/any kind of personal offence in exeter? my parents are a bit worried about it, because americans have the fame of racists here (comparing to brazil, you, unfortunately, are), so it would be interesting to say something to make them less worried about it.

Tell them not to believe the stereotypes they hear about Americans.

As a current Exonian I can assure you I’ve never seen or experienced any sort of racism or sexism within the school. Exeter is the most welcoming community I’ve ever been a part of; you’ll always find a friend here, race/gender/anything else really doesn’t matter.

I doubt you’ll find many communities as welcoming of diversity as U.S. boarding schools (and most colleges). You may want to read up on Exeter’s [Office of Multicultural Affairs](http://www.exeter.edu/student_life/8046_8060.aspx), which will give you a sense of the school’s commitment to educating students about diversity. You can expect faculty and administrators to address promptly racist or sexist behavior.

i’m not worried, due to the fact that i know that exeter and a lot of colleges and schools in the usa are welcoming to people from other countries (you can see this in the catalog, where it’s like a brazilian school when talking about the student’s diversity :D). however, the things that my parents and i heard from my classmates who went to the united states in the winter vacation (here, most families try to give a trip as a 15 yearold birthday gift to their children) aren’t exactly the best thing ever.

@PEAteacher,
While I understand that you cannot divulge any information regarding what you teach at Exeter I was wondering if you know how many applicants Exeter got for its ninth grade boarding class. Or if anyone knew. Thanks!

I don’t have the numbers handy, but there are about 200 preps in the entering class. If our yield was about 70% (I don’t know what it is; I think it’s somewhere in this range), then 285 were offered admission. And if our admission rate is about 16% (again, I don’t remember the exact number; somewhere in this neighborhood), then some 1,780 students applied for the 9th grade. Someone who has the actual numbers handy can adjust the calculation. I’m just noticing that you wrote “boarding class,” so if you want a breakdown based on boarding vs. day, forget about it I don’t have those numbers.

@PEAteacher,
Thanks I just wanted to know the acceptance rate. It helps me deal with the stress of applying. I’m touring on the 27th and I’m really nervous. Getting into and attending ANY top tier school would be amazing and Exeter seems pretty awesome. I just hope I get accepted.

One thing to keep in mind about the numbers is that, well, they don’t mean a whole lot. As I’m sure you realize, the fact that the admission rate is 16% in no way implies that you have a 16% probability to get in. That would be true if we picked kids through a lottery. We don’t So don’t worry about the numbers and just focus on putting in an application that gives an accurate picture of who you are.

@PEAteacher,
Thanks and I’m just really nervous about applying. I really want to go to boarding school and I’m just so nervous that I have trouble sleeping at night. I know I have good enough grades and good enough test scores to get in, ( I got a 93 on the SSAT last spring) but I’m just really nervous because admission is so random. But I hope that Exeter likes me and I’d really love to go there. One of my friend’s dads is an Exeter alum and he really loved it there, and he thinks I could get in but then again, he went like 20 or 30 years ago and the world of admissions has changed a ton since then. But all I can do is hope, I guess. And btw I’ve been following this thread and it has answered a ton of questions I had about Exeter and it’s been really useful. Thanks a lot for making it @PEAteacher!

Thanks for your answers, PEAteacher. :)

When washing our own laundry, would we have to use coins or a card?

A card that you can buy from E&R.
