anyone else going in as a tenth grader?

I'm going in as an 11th grader, if that helps? ha, jk. closer than a prep would be, I guess.
Any other 11th graders out there??

And for all the waitlisters: stay in there guys, I'm pretty sure that you still have a good chance of getting in!
Redpride-do you know of anyone at Exeter who came after being waitlisted?

we're from the bay area/

I just got in exeter. I'm stuck btw st. georges and exeter.

I haven't met any that came after being waitlisted, but I'm sure there are some who did.

Redpride~ what's the normal time a freshman goes to bed and wakes up?

Well it depends on the person and the day. I think most go to bed around 11 or 11:30 on a weekday and wake up around 7 for classes (if they don't have sleep-in).

Would you describe the school as really fun, but very challenging and hard work? or just plain stressful?

Really fun, but at the same time challenging, and yes, you will have to put a lot of effort into your classes. Time managment is the most important thing-- if you're able to balance your social life with your homework, you'll have an awesome time there.

i'm so happy I got accepted too!!
I have a million questions to ask (not figuratively).

Is it true that juniors spend their nights, not sleeping, because there's just too much homework?

I heard the higher your grade, the more stress and homework you have..
so.. after seeing some juniors and sophomores at Exeter, is there a great change in homework load and just simply more "things that need to get done" as your grade gets higher?

Could someone who is attending Exeter right now, tell me what a typical day at Exeter is like? (ex; 6AM wake up 5PM-10 PM hw) or something like that

I heard and know for a fact that Exeter kids excel in math and science. but sadly, I dont, so i dont know how I got into Exeter, but anyway what kind of programs are offered for history/literature loving kids? :)

I have so many more questions, but I think this is enough.. LOL
Hope I'll see you guys at Exeter!

wiseman--

I can only speak for myself, but I'll give it a shot:

Is it true that juniors spend their nights, not sleeping, because there's just too much homework?

Nope, you should usually get enough sleep if you manage your time well and don't spend study hours (8-10 or 11) on facebook or messing around. You can do that sometimes but you can't consistently sacrifice your sleep or you'll be exhausted.

I heard the higher your grade, the more stress and homework you have..
so.. after seeing some juniors and sophomores at Exeter, is there a great change in homework load and just simply more "things that need to get done" as your grade gets higher?

As far as I know, the homework load does increase as you get older, especially for upper and senior years. You'll also probably be more involved in clubs and other things, so yes, there are more "things that need to get done"

Could someone who is attending Exeter right now, tell me what a typical day at Exeter is like? (ex; 6AM wake up 5PM-10 PM hw) or something like that.

I'll just give you my approximate schedule:

6:45--wake up
7:15--breakfast (which is really important, at least for me haha)
8:00-12:30--classes/other required things
12:35-1:00--lunch
1:30-3:30--sports (not necessarily at this time)
4:15-6:00--classes
6:30-8:00--hang out, practice, start homework
8:00-10:30--homework
10:30-11:00--hang out in the dorm

You'll have free time during the day as well. How you structure your day just depends on what your priorities are, basically.

I heard and know for a fact that Exeter kids excel in math and science. but sadly, I dont, so i dont know how I got into Exeter, but anyway what kind of programs are offered for history/literature loving kids?

Exeter kids excel in a lot of things. Sometimes it's math and science, sometimes it's history and literature, sometimes it's art, music, sports, you name it. There's really such a variety of kids here that you can't generalize. I can't come up with specific programs off the top of my head, but I assure you: if you like it, someone (and most likely quite a few people) will like it as well.

Hope this helped a bit. If there's anything else, just ask.

Wow that helped me a LOT!
I don't mind if you refuse, but could you msg me your email or
AIM?
I want to talk, ask a million questions and get answers in 2 seconds :)
(and that would still take a whole day)

How was it like getting to know people? Bieng away from home like that? I am a bit nervous about that!

For me it was pretty easy getting to know people. If you have a roommate it automatically gives you someone to go around meeting people with, which makes it easier to break the ice (other new preps in your dorm also work for this), but you'll find that everyone's in the same boat as you, wanting to meet people and make friends.

It's amazing how many people you meet in the first couple days, and how quickly everyone becomes comfortable with one another.

I adjusted to being away from home pretty quickly. As cliched as it sounds, your dorm and your friends really become like your second family, and your dorm like your second home. I actually feel kind of weird being back home and having to depend on my parents again when I go back.

hey everyone, i'm a girl prep at exeter and i live in Amen (AY-min) Hall. if you have any questions about what each dorm is typically like, or any other aspect of exeter, feel free to ask here or PM me. i have a history with exeter, having had 9 relatives go there, so i'll try my best to answer any question you may have by drawing on not only my own experience, but my mother and brothers, etc.

for those of you who got in, congratulations! i hope to see you there next year and get to know you personally! it's really a fantastic school, and i love being there more than i like being at home.

I'm not sure if you're referring to 11th graders or 9th graders when you say "juniors." Assuming that you mean 11th grader:

Is it true that juniors spend their nights, not sleeping, because there's just too much homework?

THERE IS SO MUCH WORK. I honestly was shocked my first week of upper year because my workload for spanish class doubled, my bio doubled, and history....omg... English stayed around the same so I guess that's good. Oh wait, nevermind, I forgot about the 10-page paper that haunted me for a month. Oh my math stayed the same.

Then again, I did overload on my course selection so I'm not sure how other Uppers feel about this.

tom brings up a good point though; I think if I didn't get distracted so often I could have gotten six hours of sleep per night. Maybe. But on average I got 4 hours a night.

I heard the higher your grade, the more stress and homework you have..

Upper year is a huge jump from lower year, or at least it was for me. Lower year for me was the easiest.

Also it depends on which extracurriculars you commit to and how much you commit to them.

Could someone who is attending Exeter right now, tell me what a typical day at Exeter is like? (ex; 6AM wake up 5PM-10 PM hw) or something like that

7:40 Wake up and get ready
7:50 Go to D-hall
8-12:35 classes
lunch
1:30-4ish sports, shower, and nap
4-5 classes
5-5:30 dinner
5:30-8ish extracurriculars/hw/procrastination
start homework sometime... depending on day

I heard and know for a fact that Exeter kids excel in math and science. but sadly, I dont, so i dont know how I got into Exeter, but anyway what kind of programs are offered for history/literature loving kids?

i'm not a history fan, but i LOVE history classes at exeter. the teachers are just INCREDIBLE and they made me so interested and actually history was one of my favorite classes last term

I think I made Exeter sound incredibly hard, but it's actually a lot of fun. also I personally feel that it has positively changed me a lot as a person. All the leadership opportunities, the workload, the friendships... I think it pays off at the end. Speaking of which, future students-- join ESSO (exeter social service organization) because it is the MOST AMAZING ORGANIZATION ON CAMPUS. :)

Feel free to ask questions as well (PM)

Is it true that juniors spend their nights, not sleeping, because there's just too much homework?

I have never pulled an all-nighter at Exeter. I stayed up past midnight to do HW once - ONCE - the night before the last day of senior fall, because I had an English essay and a History essay to do, neither of which I had previously started. Including essay editing, I was in bed by 1.

I heard the higher your grade, the more stress and homework you have..

My hardest work was actually prep year - partially because I was in high-level Math, Latin, and French classes, which were a bit much for a young prepling. My lower-upper year (I ended up switching grades between lower fall and upper winter) was quite easy by comparison, mostly, because I had gotten used to the workload, finished the Latin sequence, and stopped doing Drama mainstages (which are 2-3 hrs, vs. the 50 minute required of club sports) in favor of directing DRAMAT shows, which meet outside of the school day schedule. Senior fall was a bit work-y, but then...as a winter/spring term senior, I do very little.

Could someone who is attending Exeter right now, tell me what a typical day at Exeter is like? (ex; 6AM wake up 5PM-10 PM hw) or something like that.

I'll give both prep year and anticipated senior spring schedules...to show comparison

PREP YEAR (Winter Classes - Math 311, Latin 321, The French Novel, English 120, Playwriting)
6:00 am - Wakeup, finish HW
7:00 am: Go to breakfast, do a bit of HW over breakfast
8-12 am: classes
1:15 - 3:30: Drama Sports & Rehearsal
3:30 - 5:05: Universal free combined with G free
5:10 - 6:00: more class
6:00 - 7:00: Dinner
7:00 - 8:00: Club, DRAMAT show rehearsal, etc.
8:00 - 10:00: Homework
10:00 - 11:00: Futz around on Internet.
11:00 pm: Sleep.

SENIOR SPRING (projected, based on known schedule)
7:00 am: Wakeup, do HW for the max of three classes I will have from the selection of: US History, Great Books, Filmmaking, Greek.
8:00 - 12: Classes (include one 50-minute free in this block)
1:15 - 3:30: Drama Sports (I'm doing a senior project which means I direct a show in EF formats, but only take four additional "classes")
3:30 on: Free periods (Senior Project "format" plus Free Period)
7-8: DRAMAT rehearsals for the other show I'm directing (Much Ado About Nothing) for the first two weeks of term, then nothing.
So, you see. It gets better! ;-)

I heard and know for a fact that Exeter kids excel in math and science. but sadly, I dont, so i dont know how I got into Exeter, but anyway what kind of programs are offered for history/literature loving kids?

It's true that Exeter is a math/science school, but as a history/literature nut I found my place in the theatre scene, as well as in Exeter's wonderful history classes. English is hit or miss, due to the subjective nature of Harkness, but History classes come out wonderfully...

There's also a literary magazine, and various writing clubs (but I've been a bad club head, so the writing clubs...didn't happen so much this year.)
