Experienced AU Grad Open for Questions

Thanks. The ones my D wants aren’t offered there which is why we are looking in the area. She doesn’t like GW (too big) but will apply to AU and Georgetown. Appreciate your answer.

Just curious,

what does she want to take?

Courses more in human bio e.g. histology, immunology, pharmacology, kinesiology, nutrition, etc…G’town offers a BS in Human Physiology as does BU. GW does also but like I said, too big. Many bio programs focus on plants and animals, or marine or environmental bio…there are very few places with a BS in Human Bio or Human Sciences. And it really is a different course of study.

Forgot to add - we examine the course of study at every place she looks and then look at the individual courses…and look to see if there are options nearby…like AU. Mt. Holyoke is also an option with courses at UMass.

I am a junior in high school and just visited AU and loved it. I was hoping i could get some feedback as to what my chances would be and things i could do to improve those chances.

GPA- 3.56ish nonwieghted
3.7ish wieghted
***Those are a little out of date but we only get our transcrpits once a year.

SAT
Math 550
CR 730
Writing 600
*I may take this again, not sure yet

ACT- I just took it saturday

I have taken 2 AP classes already and gotten 4’s on both of the tests. They were Human Geography and World History. I am in AP English 11 and AP US History now and will take 4 more plus 2 duel credit classes next year. I am in mostly honors classes and have taken only a few knock-off classes

I am in Quiz Bowl and might be co-captain next year. I am also in Spanish National Honors Society.

I am very involved in my church youth group and do a variety of serivce events through that. Also I was put in charge of at least looking into an international mission trip for our group next summer, which fits me because i want to major in int. relations.

I also work, I worked for a financial company and now i work for an engineering firm, both of which require a fair amount of responsibility.

Thats all i can think of right now, but if i remember anything else I’ll post it.
If you wouldnt mind taking a look and letting me know how i stand and what steps, if any, i should take to make this process a little less nerve racking. Thanks!

^ you are in my friend!!

Which school is closer to Capitol Hill American University or George Washington?

George Washington is about four and a half blocks (and the blocks in DC are very small) from the White House. This means that Capitol Hill is about a mile away; maybe a bit more. The World Bank, for example, is on campus. AU is a 10-15 minute shuttle to the metro station and then 15-20 minutes to the Smithsonian station. If you hopped trains to get off at Federal Center South (I believe? it’s been awhile) it would probably be 15-20 with less of a walking distance.

thanks! I have another actually I don’t know if its been asked or not but I want to intern for Congress …how respected is AU around D.C. ? AU is more of a fit for me ironically but I’m also applying to GWU …

Okay, so I am not sure if this is a silly question or not, but here goes. I saw that you were in NHS in high school, and I realized that after checking my application for AU the other night, I did not include NHS on it. (I was in my junior year and I am still in it now in my senior year.) Do you think that it was an important part of your application when you applied? Should I contact the University and inform them or just let it go?

The EC’s I did include were three years of Field Hockey, (two of which were varsity), President and Founder of a club called Students Helping African Children, Mock UN, Captian and four years on swim team, mission trips to Costa Rica, Romania, and South Africa, and the Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University. I also included the summer job I had for three years and the school year job I have now under work experience.

Thank you :)

HomeschoolGA202: Both schools are very well respected in DC. On and off the hill. Both schools have exclusive opportunities for internships and notify you of them frequently. Proximity to Capitol hill probably shouldn’t be a factor in your decision, since it will be a maximum 20 hours a week for a semester commitment out of your four years. Good luck in your decision. I go to AU (obviously) and commute two days a week to Metro Center for work – it takes me 5 minutes on the shuttle and 10 minutes on metro. It’s also very easy to get your schedule to be 3 days a week (and this is taking 5 classes) so that you can commit more time to working at an internship and be more desirable to places that want you to work 9-5.

I visited AU last week and fell in love with it. In fact, I liked it way more than i thought I would (I truly disliked GWU!)
However, there was one thing i noticed…the girl to guy ratio. Can a student elaborate on how they feel about this, please? I am a very social female, and I want to make sure that if I end up at AU, there will be a sufficient amount of males.

To be fair, I am male, but I hope I can answer your question about the girl/guy ratio. I honestly almost never realize it around campus, unless for some reason there’s an unusually high number of females in a class, but that’s usually abnormal and depends on what class. In Kogod (business school) it’s about 50/50 male-female, but in International Service it’s about 3:2. Also the more recent freshman classes have been slightly more even in the ratio. I also think being in a big city helps a lot, because once you step off campus there isn’t any big imbalance and there’s lots to do. I don’t think you’ll encounter any obstacles to a great social life, but maybe a female student could chime in and give you their perspective?

You’ll find that GW and any other school that’s heavy in the liberal arts and sciences has a higher number of females than males (I only use GW as an example because I know their ratio is also about 3:2 in favor of females). That’s just the demographic of who’s going to college these days.

@iamsurjoshua
thank you for answering my post! I will be majoring in business so i will be in Kogod, so it is good to know they have a 50/50 ratio. i am soo excited to hear back from AU within the next two weeks! :)

can any AU alum chance me? im just looking for some direction anything helps

I don’t really care about politics. I want to major in International Studies, but I’m more concerned and interested in the cultural, language, and historical aspects of it rather than politics. I hear that politics play a huge part with every student in AU, and I don’t want to be left out. Would AU still be a good fit for me?

Also, I’m middle class. Would going to AU, with a $50k tuition per year, be of good value to me?

I don’t want to pay $50k/year for a place I’d feel miserable in.

Check out this previous thread re: students who aren’t terribly interested in politics: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/american-university/895681-not-into-politics.html

Though AU’s major name is International Studies, it really is more like an International Relations major with all the politics associated with that. If that’s not for you, I wouldn’t put out $50,000. Many great state schools, have wonderful International Studies programs (Pitt comes to mind) at a much more reasonable price.
My son is a former International Studies major, you can PM me for more info
