Good luck… and congrats on getting into AU!!!

I know that this might be a little pessimistic... but what are your least favorite things about American? So far, I haven't really come across something really terrible about the University, but I'd like to know the truth. If there's anything really important for one to know before deciding to go to AU, please let me know.

Thanks!

nope... i love AU... love everything about it.

Alyssa,

How are the job opportunities in DC? Do most kids that live on campus also work? I got a scholarship, but the school is still very expensive for me. I am trying to make the money work.

yes... jobs ops are good... there is a lot of stuff that one can do on campus (do u have work study btw???)... from working at the library to working in the office of the SIS dept.

Tentley town also has places that one could find a job... starbucks is always hireing.... i'm sure that best buy could use help.. plus the metro takes u w.e u need to go. SO like if u find a job at metro center or adams morgan... like its no big deal 2 get there (for example metro center is like 4 metro stops away...)

the jobs and career center on campus can also help you find a job. In addition there is a whole website off of AU's site which lists a jobs wanted/ jobs needed type of thing. A lot of friends of mine found jobs that way

What were your stats? GPA, SAT, etc.

What's your typical schedule during the week? Like what are you doing after classes..how much time studying, your typical weekends etc?

time studying... depends... if i have a test, paper, quiz, hwk, etc...

Do you ever feel to be a "second rate" citizen in DC? I've heard a lot of rumblings about GW or Georgetown students feeling superior. Is the same true w/ businesses or internships (ie. Do they try to hire GW or GT students first?)

We visited, and were not impressed by the student tour guide. He gave the impression of being much more interested in partying than studying. How "academic" would you classify the student body?

I was encouraged by the philosophy described at the open house regarding internships and work experiences. AU appeared genuinely interested in providing a great academic education, but balancing it with work and internship experiences as well. Is that "attitude" translated into action?

Not to sound condescending or anything, but both GW and Georgetown are inherently better and more prestegious schools. Therefore, graduates from the aforementioned schools are more respected and more likely to receive the better internships, etc.

As far as I'm concerned, AU is simply a safety school for GW or Georgetown. It's a decent school (ranked in the 80's according to Newsweek) with a pretty nice campus, but it pales in comparison to the other more respected DC schools.

first off all... AU is NOT a second rate school. A friend of mine got into g-town... gw & AU... and choose 2 come to AU.

2nd off... my ex-roomie turned down HARVARD 2 come 2 AU... because she felt that people at Harvard were snobs.

3rd off... a girl in sorority turned down Yale to come 2 AU....

...AU isn't for everyone. Neither is Harvard, Yale, gw, w/e. Plus it really offends me when you say something like that about my school, esp because you aren't an expert, and you have no idea what AU is truly about unless you live/ work here.

anyway... when i first came 2 AU yeah... i didn't really like it either. My tour guide seemed to be interested in partying as well. But thats just one person. No matter what school u go 2 there will be people only interested in partying. But then I came for AUs overnight stay... and WOW did i have a good experience. The girl i stayed w/ was in the honors program. Gave up Tuffs 2 come to AU. But like she LOVES it... and i love it. AU is the perfect place for me & i'm so glad i'm here.

next off... one of my really good friends goes to GW and the guy that i'm currently dating goes to g-town... :) i think u get the picture with relations between AU and its neighboring schools...
((don't forget we also have UDC, Catholic, & George Mason neighboring us!!))

next off... everyone is competing for the good jobs and internships. It all depends on who u know and what type of a person u are. If you have a 1.0 gpa at g-town, you party and u have no contacts... the person from AU will get the hot internship if they have contacts & a good GPA.

I have to agree, my daughter loves DC and has the stats to get into both GW & GTown, and guess what, she didn't even apply. She loved American and everything it has to offer. US news rankings are a basis for information, but in reality they don't mean much of anything.

GW is also 53 K a year - i would much rather pay the 20K at American.

In my opinion GW = American(American may even have the edge in IR)

Georgetown is a step above.

Hi! My name is Veronica and I was recently accepted to American for International Relations. I have always wanted to attend American but I am sorry to say their financial aid packet makes it nearly immpossible. My stats look alot like yours 3.4 GPA, 1890 new Sat's, meaningful extracurriculars. May I ask you what you financial packet was like? and if you believe it's worth it to bury myself in $200,000 dollars in debt for American?

You have to think of it this way: When employers look for potential employees they don't primarily look towards AU because it has a mediocre reputation. GW and Gtown are both more difficult to get into and they definitely have much better national reputations - ask any person in academia or for that matter, any major corporation.

I'm sure that many of those people at AU went to AU because they received more money than the other aforementioned schools. I have nothing against AU and I think its a fine academic institution, but it can certainly not be compared to the prestige of Georgetown or GW.

You're defending your school, and I think that's great and all but when you provide antecdotal information (e.g. "my friend got into yale but chose AU.") it means nothing. College shouldn't be all about experience and fun, it should be about making it in the real world and finding the best possible job that will support you.

judge judy went to AU... and look at her now...

you are very wrong. AU is a great school and has a great rep. AU has a great career center which helps people find the best internship for them. A friend of mine will be working for Salazer in the fall.

next off... a name will only get you so far. It takes hard work and dedication to land your dream job. If your a snob who only cares about a name, then I wouldn't even want to work for that person/ company. Next off Richard Cupitt, who happens to one of my profs.. works on the UN security council... i'm sure he would give me a good letter of rec :)

next off... i never said that "au is a party/ fun school." I work hard here at AU and i worked hard to get here. When you call my school a second rate school it offends me and it just makes yourself look stupid. Look at where your posting. This is a place for students who have real questions about this school, who need my help and guidence. In addition your on my turf. This is my thread & the only thread that i'll be looking at. If you want to bash AU and make yourself look stupid thats fine.. but do it somewhere else.

hey alyssa

recently accepted to university college program. everything i've read about it is pretty vague. do you have a good idea of what it is, and what type of people are in it?

i really don't know that much about it 2 be honest. A friend of mine is in it & loves it though. There is like this close bond between you and a group of people seeing as you live together (yes you guys will all live on the same floor) and work together.

Other then that I don't really know much about it. Like she is still able to do w/e she wants... your not permently glued to these people... but its a nice opportunity & program that AU has 2 offer.

Hey Alyssa! ehmm again could you give me some insight as to financial aid?

i really don't know much about it. I didn't get any... if thats what your asking... a friend of mine is on half aid... idk.. much about it... call up the aid office... i'm sure that they can help
