Explain The Curriculum

Hey I just got turned on to idea of going to Dartmouth, and I was just wondering if anyone could possibly explain how the curriculum works? If it has a set core like Columbia, or just some core like University of Chicago, or no core at all like Brown. Thanks.

This might be helpful…?

^^
That. lol. If you need any clarification though, feel free to ask.

Those courses can count toward your major correct? And for most students do they spread those courses out over all the terms or do most get them out of the way ASAP?

Those courses can and will indeed count for your major. And the distribs will naturally be filled out as you progress through your experience, every once in awhile a student will take a class just to get a distrib out of the way, but many will be satisfied by taking classes you genuinely want to take. (Also, a good tactic for your freshman writing seminar is to take one that will kill a distrib you wouldn’t necessarily want to take a class for)

Did Dartmouth add distribution requirements? B/c when I checked on the registar’s website these were the distribution requirements: ART (Art), IAR (International or Art), ILI (International or Lit), ISO (International or Social Analysis), ITM (International or Thought, Meaning and Value), LIT (Literature), QDS (Quantitative and Deductive Sciences), SCI (Science without lab), SLA (Science with lab), SOC (Social Analysis), TAS (Technology and Applied Science without lab), TLA (Technology and Applied Science with lab), TMV (Thought, Meaning and Value).

thegeezer: Umm I’m not really sure where you saw that (strongly doubting that it was the registrars website), but the distribs have been more or less what they are for quite some time. ( [Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts](<a href=“This page has moved”>This page has moved) there the link to the actual requirements on the registrars website).

This is the site I saw it. [Distribution and World Culture Requirements](This page has moved)

geezer: Hmm, that is interesting. I played with the site a bit and there doesn’t seem to be a way to click into that page anymore though, it only works with the direct address. So I’m guessing that is some page left over from antiquity, but it is interesting. I can’t really provide any more information on those, but I can assure the above listed are the correct distribs.

So there are only 8 distributive requirements right?

Well, kind of. There’s 8 categories of which 2 require 2 classes (SOC and SCI/SLA). So there’s 10 distrib classes required in all. Plus the 3 culture requirements, but those will probably be met while doing your distribs. Also, your major will encompass at least some of the distribs. So the amount of classes you actually have to take outside your major can vary, but in all the minimum amount of classes you can take and fulfill all distribs is 10.
