Hi, I will be attending NYU’s open house soon. I might also be attending an information session/campus tour. Will NYU be able to see that I demonstrated interest by going to either one? And how much weight does visiting the school carry, as I will be flying out from CA on the weekend during the school year. Thank you.
http://www.nyu.edu/ir/pdf/cds/CDS_2014-2015.pdf Look at C7. It means almost nothing. Unless you were flying out to NYC anyways, that’d be insane to plan a trip solely to show NYU this “interest” NYU admitted 18,000 kids last year. About a 36% admit rate.
@T26E4 The reason I was wondering is because I heard someone applied ED but was waitlisted but ended up emailing the admissions officer explaining that NYU was her top choice. The reason why she was waitlist was because she never visited and was from the west coast, so the admissions officers thought NYU was a back-up choice and they wanted a higher yield. Btw I plan on applying to Stern ED, does that change anything? I know the rate is more like 15%
NYU can’t deny you for not visiting. Not everyone can just book a plane ticket to visit. Besides, there is no way that the admissions officers told the student that they waitlisted them for a specific reason. They don’t disclose that type of info to students.
Best way to express interest: Apply ED, write a killer “Why NYU” essay.
Another plus is if you’re full-pay and can afford the 75k a year price tag.
It can be hard to tell what a college uses as a proxy for applicant’s interest, since not all colleges which consider applicant’s interest use the same proxies. However, applying ED, promising that you will attend if admission and the financial aid works, is probably the biggest expression of interest that you can make.

@ucbalumnus What other ways are good to demonstrate interest except for visiting and applying ED?
You can demonstrate interest by getting on the mailing list, by attending presentations when their reps are in town and hosting ‘open houses’, and especially if they come to your school. (They almost always have a sign-up list.) If the school is at a college fair nearby, then visit. Finally, you can demonstrate interest by simply saying to a school, “You are my top choice. If I’m admitted, I’ll come.”
You can look google NYU common data set to see if they consider interest in their admission decision.
And generally there is a way to sign in at admissions when you visit.
Other things to do might include:
-getting on school’s mailing list
-attending a session given by NYU if there is one at your HS or near you in CA
-asking if you can do an interview with a local alumni
-Applying ED - but only if NYU is your top choice and you are in a position where you don’t need to compare financial aid offers
