Alright folks here's the deal, I already have made use of the extra info section of the common app to explain my co-current enrollment in two unconventional schools, aspects of university classes during high school that there wasn't any other place for, and some necessary details about a research internship. As a side, my school does not offer APs.

My parent thinks it's a good idea to include this as well: "Plans to also play soccer and take AP exams independently during junior year were interrupted by an accident where my car was hit from behind and totaled. During this time my mobility was restricted, and recovery included several months of physical therapy, I unfortunately missed the AP registration deadline, and was not given medical clearance to play sports. Fortunately, the driver took responsibility and paid damages and I have since been given a 100% clean bill of health. I plan to take AP exams senior year."

I was initially adverse to it, considering there's already a lot of information in that section. And although it's all true, idk I think it's a little excuse-y, but the parents think its needed. We leave it in the capable hands of college confidential. What do you all think?

As another point, I have played soccer since I was six, but because of the accident couldn’t play junior year. I’m really more academically focused, and elected to stay on JV because varsity just took so much time that I didn’t have with such a full schedule, so it’s not like it was my main EC.

If you already have a fair amount in additional info section, I would ask your guidance counselor to include the accident and limitations in his/her report.

I would not include this information. You can indicate you are planning to take your AP’s this year, which is often the case with seniors. Extraneous information about the type of car accident and that the other driver took responsibility should not be included and does not add anything to the overall picture . Can you include a line wherever soccer is mentioned in the first place along the lines of “injury and recovery precluded playing junior year”?

Get your GC to cover this for you. You do have too much information in there, an indication that you were seriously injured in a car accident after being struck by another driver should be more than enough info about the accident itself - plus the limitations of your academic and sports activities.

I was planning to win the lotto last week but it didn’t happen.

Don’t make excuses for not taking AP. It happens that you can’t so no need to mention. I don’t even thing it is worth mentioning you plan to take them. If you really want to you can say self studied for x,y, z AP’s and plant to take them in the Spring.

“Serious injury from automobile accident restricted movement and prevented continuing soccer.” The rest is TMI. It sounds like there is a lot of stuff in the extra info and you should really make sure it is brief and to the point and doesn’t contain a lot of extraneous info like this statement does.

Thanks all, this has turned into a massive argument with my parent. I’m already explaining my two high schools (both are extremely non-traditional) and a mini-paragraph for university classes and the internship. She keeps wanting to add information that frankly I don’t want included.

Perhaps you should tell her all additional information from parents needs to be included on a special Common App supplement. Tell her to look for Form UH-60 - Parent’s Supplement.

(Those who get the UH-60 reference will find that funny.)

The Guidance counselor can submit an Optional Report at any point. That’s who should include the info above, not you. Give you GC a bullet-point list with this info, phrased exactly as BrownParent worded it (short and to the point).
For clarifications: you took AP classes but didn’t take the exams due to the accident? Or just “intended to take AP classes and exams”? If the former, it can be included by the GC. If the latter, it shouldn’t (and neither by yourself).

It is fine to put SOMETHING in your additional information section. State that you were injured in a car accident junior year, which restricted your mobility and plans for external AP studying for several months. None of the rest (whose fault it is, etc.) belongs in there. But I think it is okay to say that much, especially since your GC rec is already submitted. Don’t let your mom badger you into putting in a bunch of extra info.

Since your school does not offer AP’s, your concurrent enrollment and other university classes show your drive and motivation to succeed. I would leave off your AP intentions, but would use the short version that BrownParent suggested in the description line of soccer in the EC section.

The registration window for AP exams is something like 3 months long, and a relatively painless process. I would not use a car accident as an excuse for missing that entire window-- true or not, I think it will appear that you’re scrounging for excuses.

Otherwise, it does make sense to mention such a significant injury since it affected your ECs and perhaps other things. Let the counselor do it. Refer to the Optional Report, as others have mentioned.
