Extra Course VS. Advanced Course

Hi,

As an IB student applying to US universities, I am aware that colleges take the rigor of one's courses into account. For this reason, I am wondering what my best option, in the following circumstance, would be.

For the diploma, one is required to take six courses; three of which are at the standard level and three of which are more advanced or of the "higher" level. For my senior year, I have been offered to either switch one of my standard level courses into a higher level, or instead take a seventh course at the standard level.

Both of these options will take up the same amount of time on my schedule but I still do not know which one to go with.

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

ask your college counselor to begin with. It also might depend on the subject.

Finally -- can you maintain excellent grades with the additional work?

If you were my son, I would ask you if there was an additional 7th course that you really wanted to take or do you think you want to study one of the SL subjects at a higher level?

I think both options look equally good to schools, so I would go with the one that you want more.

well, taking the extra course might be slightly more unique than taking another HL course.
