Hi! I’m currently a freshman and I am looking for ways to be involved in the community. I have signed up for volunteering originations such as Red Cross and UNICEF. However, I want to be more involved in the community. I am pretty interested in advocacy and human rights/racial justice and refugee programs but I am willing to try any new volunteer programs that will help me gain leadership skills. Do you guys have any suggestions as to which organizations accept Freshman volunteers?
It varies depending on where you live. You could reach out to the mayor’s office and see if they have suggestions if you are unaware of groups in your area or contact groups directly. My city has a immigrant program and a group of citizens formed a racial diversity advocacy group. Our YMCA has specific youth leadership programs. We have groups like the Zonta Club which offer youth memberships.
You could try to learn American sign language which can be very useful and probably could be done online right now.
