DS is very interested in Emory and is trying to decide if he should apply. One of his criteria in selecting colleges is extra-curricular activities. This is our first kid going to college so we have some questions. DS is undecided in his major but most likely will be in one of science major. He would like to continue playing in an orchestra but will not major in music. Is there an orchestra at Emory for this type of students? Is it difficult to get in? Also, DS is in high school golf team and would like to continue to play golf but does not need to be in a highly competitive team. What are the golf teams like at Emory?

I don’t about the golf teams, but non-music majors join orchestra all of the time. It’s a pretty popular EC at Emory (plenty of science majors do it), so it shouldn’t be a problem.

My daughter is a freshman at Emory and is in the symphony orchestra (she is not a music major.) I think about 20-25% are non-music majors, but the overall playing level is extremely high. If you go to the music dept. website, you can see the orchestra listing with their majors.

Thanks, bernie12 and piccolomom1995 for your replies. This is very helpful.

4beardolls, I just realized that the student majors for orchestra members are not listed on the website (probably for security reasons.) They were in the concert program for parents weekend. If you’d like a copy, feel free to send me a private message.

Piccolomom, thanks for the follow up. I think you answered my questions and DS decided to apply.

Well good luck on the outcome! May the odds forever be in your favor
