Extra Curriculars

I’m a junior planning on applying to Georgetown, GWU, and AU next year. Georgetown is my top choice but I’m worried that my ECs will hurt my chances. I have a 4.0 unweighted a 35 ACT and 1560 SAT. I’m also ranked 1 out of 444 in my class and have taken all AP classes possible.
EC: JV/V Soccer 9-11 (Captain, Defensive Player of the Year, Scholar Athlete Award)
Indoor Soccer 9-11
JV Lacrosse 9 Indoor Lacrosse 10
Interact Club 11-12 which involves frequent community service events.

Local Youth Soccer Referee
Weekly Spanish Tutor

Do I have a good chance for Georgetown?

Depends what you’re majoring in. By looking at your EC’s, I can’t sense a trend or make a guess on what you’re planning to major in, but the best apps you can kind of get a sense for what they’ve been gearing up to major in without even seeing their major because their EC’s show a demonstrated trend, like if someone is planning to major in Biology they would have a lot of science related courses and do a hospital volunteer position or start/be part of several science clubs. However, your EC’s, while impressive, are a bit scattered and don’t hone in on one specific field of study. Your academics are really good but especially for such a selective school like Georgetown, you should try to look for summer internships or summer camps that relate to what you wanna major in, and that’ll increase your chances of being a more competitive candidate.

My courses are definitely tailored to my interests. I’ve looked into opportunities related to political science, but my area is rural and options limited so I am unsure what to do.

You do have a good chance, Your grades and stats are excellent. Maybe something helpful to do this summer would be to find something that relates to what you want to major in and work it into your summer. An EC doesn’t always have to be a formal activity. Is there something you do as a hobby also that shows who you are?

I’m really passionate about politics and read/listen to a ton of podcasts about it but that isn’t really an activity per se. I guess my essay is probably my best shot at conveying this. Will a good essay help?

Yes a good essay will help. A great one will help even more. Can you submit an article about politics to your school paper? Submit a letter to the editor of a local newspaper about something political you are passionate about? Maybe start the young republicans or democrats club at your school? I do believe you have a good chance. Being from a rural area with less opportunities will not be held against you but try to find a way to share your passion and have that show on your application. Good luck but I am confident you will do well. Congrats on all you have accomplished so far.

@colleenbaer Can you work for the local office of your Congressman, Senator, State Senator or even Mayor? Even if you just do it in the summer plus next autumn, that will help.

Unfortunately they are only open to college students, but I will try looking into that field.

Are you applying to the SFS or the college?

Try local politics then and bug them until they find something for you. If that doesn’t work, ask your friends and family if they know anyone who works in local government or the local civil service for your town, county, school board, etc. Tell them you want to go to Georgetown and then go into politics and you need to get some hands-on experience in order to help you to get into Georgetown. At some point you will find someone who will let you volunteer. Be persistent! No one wants to be the one that rejected the next Bill Clinton for an internship!

@yonceonhismouth the college

@londondad Will do! Thanks!

update: i’ve just been accepted into a summer internship program at our district attorney’s office. how much will that help?

That is great. I think that is something that will definitely enhance your application.
