Extra Time on SAT

Wanted to start a new thread on the granting of extra time on the SAT. Specifically, on the following issues: Is a request for extra time on the SAT routinely granted by the CB with a doctor's certificaiton of ADD? Is the use of extra time reported to colleges (i.e., do they know you had extra time on the test)? What do colleges think if the know you had extra time on the SAT? Has anyone had any actual experience on the issue? For those who have been granted extra time on the SAT, did you actually use and need it? Did you also apply for and get extra time for your school tests in regular courses? Please do not simply post a reply letting everyone know that the granting of extra time on the SAT is unfair, that is not the subject of this thread - please start another thread on the fairness issue.

Hey, I get extra time on the SAT and all other tests. I hate when poeple say it's unfair because it is not, it simply levels the playing field. It's not we sit around twiddling our thumbs for 15 minutes...it's all proportional. It just takes us 30 minutes to do what someone else does in 10. I am pretty sure you need a 504 accomodationg to get extra time on the SAT, and I am also almost certain that colleges receive no record of your taking extra time. If you want the extra time on the SAT, you need to contact the collegeboard or whoever about ahead of time, I can't say I know who specfically. It will suck on the new test, it's 6 hours I think for extra time kids. Hope that helped.

They stopped flagging nonstandard administrations of the SAT in Oct. of 2003. Your counselor has to fill out documentation along with a doctor's certification for you to receive accomodations. For example, I broke my arm and had to get a writer.

collegeboard's site for accomodations

College Board stinks! My daughter broke her hand at school participating in sanctioned athletics. Because she broke it less than 3 days before the last time she can take the SAT for her colleges to get it (she's a senior) - they refuse to accomodate her. COLLEGE BOARD IS NOT "ABOUT THE KIDS". I personally think they hate kids. I guess it is about the money.

Doesn’t it do the exact opposite of leveling the playing field? Shouldn’t an even playing be, well, you know, even?! you already get to take performance enhancing drugs!

It should be called the ASAT, Almost Standardized Aptitude Test

This thread is eight years old…

odwalla if you didnt have a hand, and were asked to write an essay with the hand you never used. Is it fair to say that you were on a level playing field. Thats like saying oh we will give him a robotic arm, and it will be the same. Drugs only help so much, what some students really need is time extensions. I took my sat today (yes I have ADD, no I did not get extra time) with a pill of vyvanse, but I still found myself getting distracted and thinking about Niel Degrass Tyson as I was doing my SAT. It only helps so much, so having that extra time is really the best way to level the playing field.

Don’t encourage people who can’t bother to check the dates on threads when they post…

People can get extra time for being ADD?!?! ****, I might just start faking some ADD symptoms for the next test
