Extraculliculars vs class rank?

Hi all,

How important are ecs to UT Austin for undergrad admission? I know that class rank/gpa and SAT’s are important for admission into the college, but I heard that ecs and subject test scores count when you are selected to your major/college.

However, does this mean that if you have a high class rank(top 3 ppl) /SAT’s(1500+), it can make up for a low number of ecs and you can still get your first pick for your major?

For example, I have class rank 2(taking SATs next year), but at the end of high school I will only have ~5 noteworthy ecs from high school and like 2 from elementary/middle school. I am looking to get into cockrell aerospace or computational engineering (both undergrad programs within the aerospace and engineering mechanics department).

Search the forum for “Best Practices in admissions” and read the methodology for UT admissions. There are many things that are taken into consideration for major.

You say you are taking SAT next year- because you are a sophomore now? If so, you still have time to add meaningful ECs. If you are a junior, I would recommend testing this spring.

@gettingschooled Yes I am a sophomore. Thanks for the advice.

I’ve heard from my counselors that its better to have 2-3 strong EC that deal with what you want to major, as it shows your interest rather than 9 EC that are like cleaning the teacher’s classroom after school.

@ComplexX So if I have like 1-2 good internships in STEM and participate in UIL academics (as a worst case scenario that would be all the ECs) would I be cleared for my first choice major (assuming rank is top 3 and SATs go well)?

Pretty sure your chances are good just by being an automatic admit.
