What extracurriculars do I need to get into BSMD schools like Brown PLME and Northwestern HPME and Rice/Baylor? PLEASE HELP
Why do you want to be a physician? What do physicians do? Research? Voluntarism? Service? Ask yourself these questions. I’m sure some options will come to you in your very area.
Ask your own physician or others you know in the medical field how she/he came to that path.
You would want some sort of medical/hospital experience (volunteering, shadowing, research, etc,). But besides that, just the same sort of ECs that successful HYPMS applicants have, because these programs are up there in selectivity.
I’m only 14, but because of medical experiences with my younger brother who had a very low chance of surviving with his respective conditions, I was inspired at a young age. Because of this, I also have a LOT of connections to doctors. Here is a list of my current extracurriculars. Please comment and give me feedback!
Carnatic music- 9 years ( participated in international competitions and was broadcasted on international tv. My teacher is famous so we are recognized and perform in big shows and are kind of famous as a school)
Piano- international guild. I’m doing international testing, and I am about to do my international showcase and competition. It’s pretty exciting because Bill Clinton might be there. By the time I finish in soph or junior year, I’ll be on the national honor roll.
Guitar- concerts
Tennis- I play LOTS of comps, about to be Singles 3 or 4 on the Varsity team. And in a few months I’ll be ranked
Top 100 in my state.
I volunteer at the hospital.
I’m a BAT instructor at the Amerixan Red Cross teaching chocking rescue, CPR, and recovery position. I’m planning on being on the Youth Leadership and Advisory board in my freshman year.
I also was a Kumon Tutor and helped lots of young kids in Reading and Math.
I also tutored 7th graders in spanish.
I plan on creating a non profit organization in India tbat I will fundraise for here in the name of a particular lung disease my grandmother has.
I will also be in science competitions in my freshman year. Probably USABO and I will try to do Siemens as well as I just found a mentor. (Connections!) if I decide not to do Siemens since it’s so overdone, my mentor will probably set me up with a Stanford researcher who I will conduct research with and hopefully publish. I’m also probably doing the UCSB research Mentorship program next summer. It seems fantastic! I can’t find any other programs like this that will accept teens as young as 15. ( I’ll be 15 next February) or I might do the summer premed program at UC Irvine. One of the two.
As you can see im very driven to get into Brown Plme and Northwestern HPME and Rice/Baylor. Please help me out and tell me what else I need to do. By the way, for shadowing, I have connections so I’m not particularly worried about that at this point.
Thanks again! And please comment your advice and suggestions!
Btw for youth advisory and leadership board, that would be of my respective chapter!

For a minute there I thought this said BDSM
@shawnspencer it’s bsmd. Have any tips and/or advice?
Also I will be doing other clubs in high school
Oh and I’m doing the Congressional award! Probably silver and gold. Sorry I keep remembering everything as I keep thinking about it! Sorry!
Are you from California? I’ve heard that most Red Cross chapters don’t host BAT classes anymore.
Students I’ve taught who have attended HPME and PLME haven’t had a lot of extracurriculars in common, although lab experience is probably the most common. What they do have in common is super-high GPAs and SAT scores, and glowing recs–and awesome work ethics. Oh, and a little luck.
