Extracurriculars?

How does a college verify extracurricular activities done by a high school student on their applications?

For major awards (like national level), they should be able to verify by peeking around on the Internet (NFL nats, for example).

But for most ECs, they are verified randomly by adcoms or not at all. I think the “random checkup” is supposed to deter lying in and of itself.

Bottom line: Don’t lie on your apps!

Thanks, I was wondering about this because when they ask about the hours you spent doing a certain extracurricular you are supposed to estimate and I haven’t really kept track so just came up with some sort of a guess.

Some sort of guess is how most people do it. If they checked and got something close-ish to your guess, it would be fine. But the hours aren’t going to make a big enough difference that trying to “inflate” them a bit will be much of a help, if any.
