I’m currently finishing up my freshman year of college. I started the year at a different school as business undecided. I transferred after the first semester to a school that was closer to home and was an undecided major.
I have been taking gen eds this semester but I only have a few left to take after this. The problem is that I can not make a decision on a major and if I don’t, I am going to have to spend more time in college catching up once I figure it out.
I did not think that I wanted to do business because the classes that I had taken at my first school were pretty boring to me. I did ok in all of them, not that great, but I was struggling a lot with depression that semester. When I transferred, I thought I was leaning toward a science major and then I thought about doing a health science.
The problem with being undecided is that I would have to apply to the health science majors by next spring, and I would not have all of the classes I need to apply, so I would have to wait another year to reapply.
Basically, with all of the majors, I would start taking courses for it during sophomore year, so if I wanted to switch during sophomore year, I will add more time spent in college.
Some people have told me I should just take a semester off, but I know that would drive my parents nuts. I just have no clue what I want to do or even what I would be good at.
IMO, I’d go with a Physical Activity/Fitness Major. For example, I’m currently a PA/Fitness major & my dream job is to work for a sports team, preferably at the college level. However, they’ll be other future career opportunities for you if you decide to choose this major.
Furthermore, Physical Activity & Fitness has been proven to improve people’s overall mood. So, you can improve your depression while learning more about Physical Activity & Fitness.
Go to your college’s career center or HS Guidance Office and talk to them. They may have tests/tools that help you figure out what career (and therefore major) is best for you)

Pre-med/sociology/public health/psychology are majors where you want to help people directly.

Some career coach years ago gave me the advice to journal about what you did for fun when you were eight years old. Then ask yourself what careers that could possibly translate into. I’ve had students do this exercise many times over the years, and inevitably, a couple of them have a “eureka!” moment. It’s worth a try!
