FA After Sibling Enrollment?

So I know that once my younger sibling enrolls, my need-based FA package should increase. I am currently receiving 30k in FA right now. How much should I expect this package to increase by when my sibling enrolls in college in a few years? (I will still be in college during that time)

It depends on the school. Does your school promise to “meet need”? Does your school require CSS Profile?

What was your FAFSA EFC?

It will depend on your school’s policies. If your school uses PROFILE, usually, your family part of the need will be 60% of what it would be without the sibling in college. Whether they meet this need and how depends again on the school’s policy. Does it guarantee to meet 100% of need? Does it cap loans? These factors do come into play. Your family EFC, for FAFSA is cut in half when this happens, so you could end up PELL eligible if your EFC ends up less than about $5K and you may become eligible for other funds as well. Plus your loans could become subsidized.

Ask the college financial aid office how it treats a sibling going to college in future years> They can tell you more specifically.

DS’s school does not meet full need. It is a Profile school. When little sis enrolled in college for his senior college year, he got a rousing $250 in additional MERIT aid. He didn’t get a nickel of need based aid. His EFC went down by over $20,000.

Thumper’s S’s experience can easily happen at a school that does not meet full need. You could get nothing more from the school and if your EFC doesn’t hit PELL levels and you are already getting subsidized loans, you could end up with the same package. Do ask your school.
