FA at Reed

My family has 10 people on a $130,000 salary, with 30,000 paid on our house, and $2,500 in bank. How much aid should I expect at Reed? Anyone know if their calculator is accurate?

My D attended Reed, but they didn’t have a calculator at that time to my knowledge.
Her PROFILE & FAFSA EFC was the same.
Typically FAFSA EFC is 1/3 to 1/4th of before tax income.
However # of dependents can lower it. How many of the dependents can you take the child deduction for?
Aid is also met with a combination of loans, grants & work study.
D received mostly grants, however she did have friends who couldn’t attend because of aid package

I applied to Reed last semester, around February, the FinAid office released fin aid statement. I remember calling the office beforehand also. The fin aid officer who assisted me was very helpful with estimates. I would call them after Winter break.

My family has 10 people on a $130,000 salary,

Two parents and 8 children… Or are there extended family members and/or adult children who are out of school?

Someone else posted awhile back that the calculators don’t give much allowance for larger families and some won’t count extended family living in the household because they often have their own income.

Have you tried Reed’s Net Price Calculator?

8 children and two adults. I tried the college board calculator for Reed, and it said my family would make like a $21,000 contribution… I’m not sure how if we could pay for that, so do people know if it is accurate for my situation?

When d attended Reed our income was less that half your families, our family size was four & EfC was about $14,000. So the amount you have from calculator sounds plausible.

Actually, that sounds low for that income.

It does seem that you were given some allowance or your large family - if your family were smaller, your “family contribution” would probably be well over $30k per year.

As with many large families, you probably don’t have a college fund…that’s what’s hurting you. “Family Contributions” are based on an assumption that some of the money will come from savings (college fund)…especially when the family has a 6 figure income. A very large family typically can’t pay out $20k+ per year for ONE child’s education.
