So my parents very recently told me that they were planning in separating. I'm applying for private schools next year, and would be needing financial aid if I was to enroll somewhere. Does anyone know what the financial aid or tuition payment policies are for divorced parents? I'm very new to this. Thanks!

For FA, almost all if not all schools follow this principle quoted from the SSS website:

"What if I am a divorced parent?

Generally speaking, both of the student’s parents are expected to help contribute towards tuition as they are able, regardless of marital status. You should expect that each parent will be asked to submit a separate PFS and will not have access to each other’s application information. Different schools may have different requirements for divorced parents. Be sure to contact the school(s) you are applying to in order get the most appropriate guidance for each school."

If they are only separated I do not know exactly how that would work, but the same idea would hold for FA. For tuition payments, that would depend on custody issues that are beyond my knowledge, but generally both parents would still be responsible.

Thank you!
