No, CUNY is a commuter system. There is no shuttle service, Op would have to use public transportation. Right now a 30 day metro card (subway/bus) is $112/month. housing fees are for dorm only during the school year .

I don’t see how someone can survive in NYC year round (not just during the school year, as the OP has expressed a strong desire to move out from her parents’ home) without making a lot more money than 12K.

Klyn: it’s very difficult to work and go to school because you won’t have time to study.
Costs vary across the country but lets look at your expenditures if you work.

Estimate a low minimum wage of $8 per hour x 40 hrs =$320 per week or $1240 before taxes. Subtract Rent $600-$1000 month. Subtract Food, utilities, transportation and clothing, laundry. Health Insurance??? Plus money for books and lab fees. Then you have to come home and study. It’s hard. Depending on what area you live in, in this country, you still will be very limited and tired.

Oh, I forgot to furnish the place: what about furniture, bedding, kitchen supplies, appliances?

If she moves into an already-furnished apartment with roommates, she won’t have to worry too much about furniture, etc.
