My EFC is 0, and I’m a junior transferring to a csu this upcoming fall. They gave me the amount a freshman can borrow. I accepted the amount without thinking about it. Should I still contact the financial aid office or did I mess up by accepting the amount already? I’m assuming that since my transfer hasn’t been evaluated that they accidentally wrote me as a freshman.
Thanks.
Sounds like the school hasn’t yet processed that you have your units/credits. Call them, but likely once they have your transcript and processed that you’re a junior, you can borrow more.
What about sub loans…did you get any of those?
Were you offered the annual amount or is that the semester amount?
Jr’s can get up to 7,500 per year and only 5,500 can be subbed. So that is 3,750 per semester and 2,750 cam be sub.
For freshman they can get up to 3.500 sub (not unsub) or 5,500 total sub and unsub.
I think that since you have accepted it you will need to contact them to tell them the amount you need to borrow so it can get straightened out.
@mom2collegekids I’ll do that then. They did give me sub loans, that’s what my question was about. I think you meant to say unsub? I will have enough to cover all of my expenses for this upcoming year, I just wanted to be able to take out the max loan this year just to get me started. I get veterans assistance and so I’ll have enough $ to cover next year but I just needed the max sub loan for this year since it will help with paying for a dorm which is the most expensive expense.
@BrownParent The 3500 is for the whole year for the subbed, which is the amount that freshman can borrow. Since I’m transferring in the fall I should be able to borrow 5500 subbed. I don’t plan to take out an unsubbed loan since I’ll have enough to pay for everything this semester with just the subbed loan.
The max you can receive in subsidized loans is $5500, I believe as a junior.
Your subject is inquiring about unsubsidized loans. In post 3 you say you don’t plan to take an UNsubsidized loan.
So what are you asking? Are you asking if the school should be giving you addition subidized loans??
Once you are there and your credits are sorted out, the financial aid office will be able to change your loans to the junior level. This is pretty standard for transfers.
@thumper1 Whoops, unsub in the title is a mistake. I’m only planning to take out subsidized loan.
OK, the bottom line is that you don’t have to worry. If you need it to make COA and you are 0 EFC then you qualify. If you qualify then you get it. There is just some point you need to let them know the amount you need to take within the allowance.
As others have said, your loans were packaged based on the credits that were in the system for you at the time aid was awarded. At that time, you must only have had enough credits posted to be considered as a freshman. Once you all of your transfer credits have posted, ask the financial aid office to adjust your loans - most likely, this will not occur automatically; you will have to ask. I used to work at a large state U, and we would have asked the student to submit a loan increase request, noting on it that they are actually a junior - and requesting the full $5500 sub. Every school has its own policies, but most will not re-package your aid without your asking.
