Facing suspension due to mental health / behavioral issues (but doing OK academically)

I have been undergoing a lot of mental health issues and have been hospitalized numerous times this year and last year. I am going through medication adjustments and have been exhibiting poor behavior with resident life (in and around my living quarters). But I am well behaved in class and even excelling in some of my classes.

I was having suicidal ideation with meltdowns. In addition, I have had explicit interactions with some of the staff and students in the residence halls. Campus police was involved on multiple occasions.

Will my actions on the residential side negatively effect me on the classroom/academic side? In other words, is there a good chance I can be expelled from the university completely in all aspects?

to add…I have been suspended for the duration of this weekend until I see the Dean of Students on Monday.

Yes, they may expell you completely.

A little more explanation can help

Sorry for the difficulties you have faced, and I hope your meeting goes well.

You have to look at it from their point of view. They are probably thinking that if they don’t expel you, and then someone gets hurt in the future after a repeated history of incidents, they could be sued for not taking reasonable precautions. :frowning:

You need to behave yourself at college. Mental health issues don’t absolve you of responsibility for your actions. Expulsion and other disciplinary action can be appropriate even in the absence of academic difficulty.

If campus police need to be involved in multiple occasions, it doesn’t matter where the infractions occurred. If your safety and/or the safety of others on campus is at risk, they will likely not want to have you on campus until you are stable enough for there to be no incidents anyplace.

I called a girl the “c” word multiple times

At minimun you will probably be banned from living on campus. It sounds like you have been given mulitple chances to get your act together. You might want to start planning a transfer to a college near your parents home if there is one and move back there while also getting your mental problems under control.

There are a few things that they could do: suspend you from living on campus, request that you medically withdraw (a request is not really a choice, it’s either you medically withdraw or you face suspension), AND/OR state that you are required to take a class in sexual harassment along with a apology.

Most likely they’ll ask you to take a medical withdraw.

@Tncollegeguy I know students who had to take a medical withdrawal for mental health issues, even though their behavior was otherwise not disruptive and their grades were fine. You might have to face the same thing or worse.
