Hi! My son is applying to several pricey technical colleges:). We are set to do the FAFSA this week but I have a question. He has a disabled sibling that receives a state-funded waiver which includes parental pay because his disability is medical and requires nursing level care. As of last year, that income was declared by IRS as no longer taxable, falling under the same umbrella as payment for foster care. Does this count as income I need to report on the FAFSA? It is a unique situation and I can’t find the answer anywhere. Thanks!
Someone is probably wiser than I on this but I can say we had to enter my husband’s Military disability and it did count against us in our EFC
I am not aware that this would be excluded from reporting on the FAFSA, but you might want to check with the financial aid office of a college in your state. If it’s reportable as income, and if it makes enough of a difference in the EFC that it could result in increased grant aid (such as Pell), you could request a special circumstances review to see if it could be excluded from income (due to the fact that it is not available to be used toward anything other than the care of the disabled sibling).
