FAFSA and parents bank accounts

We filled out the fafsa a few days ago and I don't recall it asking how much money we had in savings, checking, etc. It did ask about my dtr's accounts. I thought this was a question where parents always worried about because the money is usually there for other expenses and not for college expenses. Did I miss the question??

thanks in advance!

What was your AGI? Can you file a 1040A or 1040EZ? Do you or your kids receive any of the government programs the fafsa asks for? You may have qualified for the simplified means test or even the auto 0 in which case assets aren’t asked for. As I recall there is a question whether your assets exceed the asset protection allowance. Did you answer no to that? Then it doesn’t care about the details of the assets.

Our AGI is $145,000. No, we could not do the 1040A or 1040EZ. No, our kids do not receive any gov’t program assistance. What does this mean?

Look at table A5 here:

http://ifap.ed.gov/efcformulaguide/attachments/091312EFCFormulaGuide1314.pdf

Do your non-retirement savings and investments exceed the amount in the table for the number of parents and the age of the older parent?

I checked and no, our non-retirement savings and investments DO NOT exceed the amount in the table. So, is this the reason they didnt ask the question on the fafsa for us?

thanks!

Do you recall answering a question to that effect? If you answered no it would skip the details. I don’t recall that question myself from filling out fafsa but I recall someone posting a question about it here on CC.

thanks so much! BTW, you’re not an annoyingdad  - you’re very helpful
