FAFSA Corrections

We filed our FAFSA in January before we filed our taxes. In early March we submitted corrections after filing and immediately realized we made an error. We corrected again a few days later and resubmitted the FAFSA. We got an e-mail yesterday saying that our original correction from early March has just been processed. I had no idea it took over 2 months for them to process it. Meanwhile, the "incorrect" correction increased our EFC by $2,000, and the later "correct" correction increased it by $1,000. Will FAFSA process the second correction? We are concerned that my D's school will decrease her aid, and she made the decision to attend based on the school's financial aid offer which she received in late March. We assumed the school had our corrected FAFSA information when they made the offer, but we now know this is not the case. Anyone have experience with this? I don't want to contact the school yet because I don't know if her aid will decrease or not.

so- the FAFSA was done online?
Three times?
At the very least I imagine you will need to verify the numbers ( send in documentation to school- 1040 form and w-2s)
if the FAFSA was done online with a PIN you can check to see which versions have been processed

I wouldn't hesitate to ask the school which versions the offer was based on, as they will get that information anyway & the sooner you know how your package will be adjusted the more time you can have to appeal/correct/find more money.

Did you also send in a copy of your tax return? If so, the school may have made the corrections to your FAFS already. If so, then the FA pkg you received will be the correct one. We called each of my son's schools to verify that they had the most recent FAFSA, using the FAFSA change date and EFC amount (and mentioned the most recent change made). Most schools had received the updated FAFSA. Other schools said they would make the changes using numbers from our tax return (which they already had).

We contacted FAFSA and were told that Fordham changed the information (our D is not attending Fordham) back; however, it is incorrect. We called Fordham and asked why they did this (we had previously sent them our tax return, so it was there in black and white) and weren't given a satisfactory answer, and that they have no intention of correcting it. Fordham told us to contact UNH, where my D is attending, and let them know. UNH said not to worry but that if Fordham's change affects my D's financial aid package, we will just fax them our tax return. It's news to me that a school can change your FAFSA information, and it really annoys me that Fordham did this two days ago, long after my D made a decision to attend another school.

I knew that schools could change your FAFSA, as my daughters school did that ( I had to change it back as they had made an error in what appendix an amount came under), but that would be extra annoying for a school that you are not even attending to change the info.

A friend had her son's FAFSA changed at one point by a school he didn't attend. A very injurious change, as the school claimed her 2 flat house (she rents the one they don't live in) could be turned into a condo and thus sold, becoming a rather substantial asset. No matter that turning such properties into condos in our local real estate market is not current practice. She was able to change the FAFSA back, but after a struggle.
