I recently corrected daughter's FAFSA and the only difference is she HAD to file a tax return for the scholarship money received last year. (no income earned) Went from 0 eft to $253. Now I understand this is a minimal amount, but isn't it weird that she has to pay because we are low income and received full aid last year?

No, it's not weird. It would seem that your daughter has terrific financial aid, and some of it is for room, board and expenses. Financial aid in those categories is considered taxable income. That taxable income showed upt as INCOME on your FAFSA. Congratulations on a great finaid award. Paying $253 is pretty nominal.

momray - scholarships reported on your daughter's tax return would show up on her AGI but the amount included in the AGI that is from scholarships should then be reported on the student worksheet C. (question 42 on FAFSA). My understanding is that Items on worksheet C are deducted from the AGI so if that is the only income she had there should be no affect on the EFC. Double check her FAFSA to make sure you entered the correct amount on worksheet C.

Thank you, thumper and swimcatsmom. I'll recheck the figures.
