You should wait until the taxes are done, then update everything on your FAFSA that needs to be updated (remember, don’t update asset info - that is a “snapshot in time” and is not to be changed). You can definitely include your brother in the number in household, although whether or not he can be claimed on your dad’s taxes is something else (but it doesn’t matter one way or the other in terms of being able to include him in # in household on FAFSA).

You have met the February 15th deadline already by filing with estimated numbers. If your parents file taxes electronically, they can use the DRT about 2-3 weeks after filing. It is best to wait to update using the DRT, since it is sure to be correct. You can enter the info manually, of course, but if you are selected for verification, you will need to use the DRT, anyway.

@ thumper: Ah, yes! I did understand that, but I was expecting our calculated EFC to be less than what it ended up, I guess. Definitely not the full grant, haha! Thank you though!

@ kels: Yes, we are waiting until their taxes are done before touching the FAFSA again haha! I did read about that information that couldn’t be changed, so we made sure that the questions with “on this day” were accurate. We answered no on the “do your assets exceed this amount” or however the question was worded, and that was all my parents had to answer with the “on this day,” other than the ones about my checking/savings/etc.
For some reason I thought that it had to be updated by the deadline… not really sure why. So having the estimated information is okay for the schools that have the early financial aid deadlines? I’ll tell my dad to use the DRT when we go to update–they do file electronically, I believe. Thank you so much again!!
