FAFSA for Graduate/Undergraduate

Hello!

I'm currently a senior, scheduled to graduate in 2013. My initial plan was to apply to graduate programs for Fall 2013 admission, but due to certain circumstances I wasn't sure if I had a good chance of being admitted, so I only applied to a few programs. My back up plan was to stay an additional year of undergraduate, which would be covered by a renewable scholarship and financial aid (there was a semester of undergraduate where I did not use Financial Aid, so I should still have Pell/Grants/Loan eligibility).

I filed FAFSA under the impression I was staying a 5th year. However, I recently found out that I am being considered for admission to a graduate program and have been invited to interview. They sent me information about filing a FAFSA to be eligible for assistantships/funding. Is it possible to file TWO separate FAFSAs? One for my 5th year and one for graduate school?

Thanks!

You only need to file one FAFSA. The numbers required are the same for graduate or undergraduate. However, as a grad student you will be automatically considered independent and be offered $20,500 in unsubsidized loans - the only direct aid available for graduate studies.

However, depending on your level of financial need, you may be eligible for federal Graduate Work Study Program funding, which would be administered by the school as part of your assistantship package.

Is the grad school different from your undergrad school? If so, file the FAFSA for undergrad using your current school code. Once it has processed, update it to grad info - remove the current school code - add your new school code - and make sure you sign with your PIN.

Yep, it’s a different school and looks like everything has worked out. Thank you for your help!
