Fafsa help?

Hi everyone I submitted mu fafsa with a professional from our school. I feel like she screwed my fafsa over and idk what to do.

First of all my parents are married but filled separately (idk why? I asked them . they aren’t from this country) So she included only my mothers tax info and didn’t include my fathers income. She also put they were divorced/seperated.

She put down we have 3 members in our household (using my mothers tax form). That’s not true! We have 6 fam members. My father’s income is blank and basically it satates i have a single mother.

This is all a lie! Idk how to fix it and I have to commit to a college soon. We tried submitting with both of my parents as married but filling seperate return and it wouldn’t let us submit. I don’t want to have to redo and then have it not submitted on time bc of the process to fully submit. What should I do?

Also if you aren’t allowed to file separately when married why doesn’t the tax preparer intervine? I don’t want to lie on my fafsa and jeopardize my education :frowning:

@kelsmom

Do you NOT proofread this thing BEFORE you electronically signed it? Which of your parents electronically signed the FAFSA? They signed saying the info was accurate too.

Did you get financial aid packages based on this false information?

To anyone else reading this…PROOFREAD your financial aid application forms BEFORE you submit them and check for accuracy.

To the OP…tomorrow is MAY 1. You need to contact your colleges and let all of them know your FAFSA is inaccurate…if it is.

P.S. You ARE allowed to file “married filing separately”. That is NOT your issue.

You need to change the marital status of your parents to MARRIED. The go from there.

Who are the 6 members of your household?

My 2 parents,3 siblings and I. Yeah, we proofread the counselor said I should submit it that way. I followed her orders I have never done this I assumed she knew more than me. I get until MAY 3rd to submit. My parents also don’t speak English so they assumed what she submitted was correct. I thought so too, she’s been doing fafsa for as long as it has existed.

We tried submitting it as married- filled separately and it would not let us submit it. I was thinking of calling fafsa rn at 11:00 am California time. I’m getting close to my editing limit.

YOU need to know your FSA ID (username and password) that you signed your FAFSA with. And one parent also needs their own FSA ID that they sign the FAFSA with.

How did the person submit your FAFSA without those?

It’s ok to get help filling out FAFSA, but FSA IDs should not be given out, they are meant to be only used by you (and your parent).

If your parents are indeed married, then you report both their incomes from their 2015 tax returns, if they filed separately.

Ask the college how to provide their income information if they filed a foreign tax return.

If you can’t go into your FAFSA when logging in with your FSA ID, and change marital status to married and correct the income information, then contact the college to let them know what happened.

Thank you. Yes I logged in myself and I have my mothers account on my phone as well so signed with hers. I was notified I ahd to verify my fafsa by many of the colleges I applied to.

So did you supply verification data to the colleges? They were likelynasking for verification that your parents ARE separated…because your MOM’s tax return says MARRIED.

My father does not have a social security # just an itin.

Nope I didn’t supply verification, I wasn’t going to attend those colleges. The college I committed to hasn’t asked (I’m assuming they will) so I need to get this done before May 3rd. That’s when my online checklist is due.

If your father has no soc sec number, then I believe you just put zeroes for the 9 digits. As long as one parent has a sic sec number (mom) and therefore she was able to set up a FSA ID, then the FAFSA should be able to be signed by you and mom and submitted online.

OKAY SO FOR THIS LINE “Enter your parents’ exemptions for 2015. This amount is found on IRS Form 1040-line 6d.” should i put what’s on my mom’s tax form or my fathers?

Did your dad also file “married filing separately”?

I called fafsa and they helped me figure it out. Thanks for your help.

I don’t know how it works when the question asks about one tax return, but what if they each filed a return?

So if you don’t mind, could you post here what the FAFSA helpline told you regarding the parent tax return information, if parents file married separately?

Your parents might have a very good reason for filing separately (often it is because of high medical bills for one, or a complicated business situation) but there are tax credits they will not be able to take if their status is Married filing separately, like the AOTC.

They may not qualify for it, but it is a consideration for future tax years.
