Does anyone know if sorority/fraternity housing is considered “on” or “off” campus for the purpose of filing the FAFSA? The FAFSA is asking for planned housing next year and I am not sure what the Greek housing is considered.
I mark my daughter’s as ‘on campus’ because the house is actually on campus and owned by the university (although she pays the sorority separately) The cost is actually less than the dorms. If the Greek housing is private and off campus, then I’d mark off. The sororities at my school are off campus, owned and run by the sororities themselves (house corporation boards) even though they are just across the street from the student union and much closer than many of the dorms that are a bus ride away, the university has nothing to do with the amount charged. The frats aren’t even student clubs and are independent so definitely off campus living arrangements.
I don’t think it matters all that much. Usually the cost of living in a dorm or living off campus (for COA purposes) is not that different.
My other daughter goes to a school where the Greek housing is owned and managed by the university, so if you live in Greek housing your bill is paid to the university. Definitely ‘on campus.’ She doesn’t live in that housing, however.
At IU if it is a “housed” fraternity/sorority it would be considered on campus. They all have agreements with the University.
I believe all freshman live in a dorm freshman year if you Rush.
