Fafsa question 44i

Does subsidized housing count as someone else paying on my behalf

Is the lease in your name?

Who is paying your rent? Example: The lease is in your name and your rent is $1000. Your parents, relatives, significant other, friend is paying $800/month and you are paying $200 (or if they are paying your entire rent). This is a situation where someone is paying on your behalf.

Do you mean subsidized as for example, the market rent is $1000/month and you only pay $200 a month? Or if you are on section 8 and you/your family does not pay market rent? In these two situations it is not someone else paying on your behalf

It is subsidized.

by whom?
Do you live in public housing?
Are you on section 8?
Are you in rent stabilized housing?
Are you in a building that sets aside a number of apartments for low/middle income families and you pay less than market rent?

Please clarify

Yes. Section 8.

@on4ward , if it is a program like s8 and the rent is $1000 but your portion is $200, then you should list $200 when asked what you pay for rent. It would be as if you live with two roommates in a $900/month apartment - your rent would be $300/month, not listed as $900/month when asked how much do “you” pay for housing each month.

I think that is your question.

What do you mean?

@kelsmom, if part of a student’s housing is covered by section 8 funding, does that count as a bill paid on their behalf?

No, it’s not considered a bill paid on their behalf. It’s treated like other social welfare programs, in that it explains how one is able to live on very little income … but it is not counted as income on the FAFSA. (Rent subsidies for low income housing are specifically noted in the Federal Student Aid Handbook as NOT to be reported on the FAFSA.)

Thanks @kelsmom for all of your guidance. I’m very confused by this one question. Are they asking me as the parent to provide the amount of money I paid for my child’s rent, groceries, tuition? My financial information was not included on the FAFSA form.

Could you explain this? Why wasn’t your financial info included on the form?

Is your child independent due to age or are they a grad student?
