I'm filling out the FAFSA for the first time. My children have both UTGA accounts and 529 accounts. Child A is 18yo and will be a freshmen and considered dependent child. On his UTGA account, we(parents) are listed a custodian on the account.

Does that mean we show that as a student asset even though he is considered a dependent child?

What about Child A 529 plan? I'm assuming that is listed as parent asset.

Also, Child B has a UTGA and a 529 plan. How should I report those? Would both of those be a parent asset?

Yes
Yes

Child B’s UTGA & 529 are not reported on the Child A’s FAFSA

I disagree concerning Child B’s 529. If the parent is the custodian I believe it has to be listed as a parent asset on Child A’s fafsa. The beneficiaries of 529s can be changed.

OP,
Who is the owner of Child B’s 529?

The parent - you have to report it on Child A’s FAFSA

Child B - you don’t

What about Child B’s UTGA account? Do I have to report that on Child A’s FAFSA application?

^No Child B’s UTGA is belong to Child B, not the parent / Child A
