Thanks this is very useful information that will come in handy. In Mexico people are generally not required to pay taxes for any matter unless a large business or large income are earn. I assume they will file tax returns come 2010 and I will use that information to generate a new FAFSA in 2010, wait. That brings a Questions. Do I use my parents 2008 or 2007 income tax return information when I complete the FAFSA? Also when I again reapply I assume I would use the 2008 or how would that work?

Recently, I finally received my official financial aid notification of how much my school (UCLA) will offer me in financial aid… I haven’t submitted the offer yet because I still wanted some time to think what loans I should of chose that UCLA offered.

So today, I received a strange email from FAFSA stating:

"Dear ****,

Your Correction to your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has been processed and the data will be made available to the school(s) listed on your corrected FAFSA. The financial aid office at your school will contact you if additional information is required.

The Financial Aid Administrator (FAA) at your school has made corrections to your application. If you think you need to make additional corrections, please contact your FAA before doing so."

Today, I wanted to go continuing on submitting my financial aid offer, but the offer was MISSING from the UCLA’s financial aid website…

The thing is, I haven’t made any changes or corrections to my FAFSA. Also why would the school change/correct my FAFSA report and take out my financial aid???!!

Would this be a sign of receiving less grants?

Please help.

Thanks,

jc09jr, when you file in 2010 you use income info from 2009. Whether they were in Mexico or the US is irrelevant; they have to report all income. If they are required to file in either country, they must do so in order for you to receive aid. If they are not required to file, they will be asked to fill out a non taxfiler statement IF they are selected for verification.

But what about for My application that I will be filling out soon? (I wish I would have filled it out sooner) Do I use my parents 2008 income tax return information or the previous 2007 year?

For the current school year, 2009-2010, you must complete the 2009-2010 FAFSA using 2008 taxes.

For the next school year, 2010-2011 (which will start fall 2010 or possibly summer 2010 depending on the school policy) you will have to complete the 2010-2011 FAFSA using 2009 taxes.

As your family income is fairly low I am surprised you did not complete FAFSA before now. You would probably have been eligible for some aid for your current semester (or quarter if that is what you have) Have you asked you current school if it is possible to file now for aid there for the current term? I am not sure if that is possible but it is worth asking. The worst they can say is no.

If I file for a FAFSA now and then go to my Financial Aid department at my school is it possible that I can get a refund to what I have paid out of pocket or am I stuck now? And thanks for the answer. I’m completing the form tomorrow.

I don’t know. I think it will depend on the school. Ask them.

I was recently trying to pass some advice about financial aid on to a friend of a friend whose granddaughter was applying to a CC very late in the day. It was just before school started and I was surprised when I heard back from them that the CC said it was too late for her to apply for aid for the current semester but she could next semester. My son applied very late at his CC and got aid. I did not think federal rules disallow aid from being offered during an ongoing semester (perhaps kelsmom can advise here?). So I *think *this was a case where a specific school must have had a cut off point for processing aid applications. So ask your school.

Wafflemasher, the school may have changed it as a result of verification or they may have noticed a non-financial error. Pull up your SAR (the latest version) and compare it to the one prior to that. As far as the award going offline, I think you should call the FA office on Monday as it’s getting very close to the start of school to be finalizing aid!

After applying for a FAFSA how long after will I generally be able to apply for aid anywhere? Is it immediate or does it take some time for processing? If it does then how long after I submit the application?

Not certain of your question, but I’ll try.

The FAFSA is typically a part of the financial aid application process, albeit often the largest part. You list the schools you want to apply to on the FAFSA. Typically the schools will notify you of the other financial forms that need to be completed when you submit the admissions application. Therefore, you often will be completing the FAFSA and other financial forms concurrently.

AT the 2 schools we have been involved with completing FAFSA is the financial aid application for the school. I think my son had to fill out a very short form for the financial aid department at his school, just some personal details. If I am remembering right he got a note from the school after the FAFSA had been processed reminding him to complete the form. I don’t recall my daughter having to fill out any additional forms at her school.

Again only your school can tell you their own exact requirements and policies. Go into your financial aid department monday (don’t delay as you are already doing this very late) and ask them.

Yeah, I’ll pay a visit over to the Financial Aid department at my school, but should I wait until I get a response from my FAFSA application with the “SAR” information to go, or should I just go ASAP without that information?

Go and ask questions ASAP.

Will do, thanks for the information you’ve provided me with.

Should we get ready to fill out the FAFSA application? Such as: getting together what information we need to input into its online application, etc. I heard it takes a few hours to put in all the information they require…so I want to get the information gathered up before hand. ;o

Star, are you filing for aid for this year (09/10)? If so, then yes. If you won’t be starting until the 10/11 school year then you won’t be able to file FAFSA until Jan 1st. In that case, you should just plan to have whatever info (year end paystubs, bank statements, etc) that would help you to estimate your 2009 taxes (or use 2008 as a guide if nothing substantial has changed) and your/your parent’s asset info. You can learn about the FAFSA process in the meantime and get an estimated EFC at [FAFSA4caster - Federal Student Aid](http://www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov/F4CApp/index/index.jsf)

If you save your info, it will help you fill out your FAFSA later.
