I was going to fill out a FAFSA online, www.fafsa.com or something similar. But it said it would cost $75. Is there any way I can do it for less, or for free? And I haven't even picked out a college or classes, so am I doing things in the wrong order? Forgive me, I'm totally ignorant about this stuff, trying to figure it all out.

i think they will lessen or disregard the $75 if you are really strapped for cash, but you would have to prove that somehow too, i think
sorry that is not really helpful!

FAFSA is free--that's what the first F stands for. If someone is trying to charge you $75, you may have the wrong site--it sounds like a scam. Now CSS Profile costs something to file, but FAFSA does not.

However, you can't fill one out for next year until after January 1st, anyway. And you will have to know which schools you are applying to when you fill it out, because you have to list them so FAFSA can be sent to them.

FAFSA is FREE. No charge ever. Profile has a charge...but not FAFSA. The FAFSA site is FAFSA.gov....not FAFSA.com. That is the problem. Go to FAFSA.gov and you should see the FREE form.

one of my favorite financial aid sites is finaid.org
it will give you the correct links like the FAFSA.gov that thumper mentioned
