Unemployment is “unearned income” and since you have more than $950, you should have filed a tax return. That doesn’t mean you will owe any taxes, but it does need to be filed. If you don’t file, and you end up subject to verification, you will hold up any federal aid (see post #16 by kelsmom).

financiallylost (OP) - given my experience filing taxes for several newspaper carriers, you probably won’t owe anything, because your expenses are liekly to be more than what you earned. You need to start now recreating a log of those expenses to you’re ready to file your tax return. List the dates you delivered, and your mileage for each day, and keep that log with a copy of your tax return. If you file a C-EZ, you don’t have to go into detail, but if the IRS decides to check, you will need that log. You will also need your friend’s social security number, and as suggested, you need to file a 1099-misc for him. DO NOT download this form from the IRS website. You will need to order an original scannable form which they will mail to you. The other piece of bad news, you don’t get to file the simple 1040-EZ, because you will have a schedule C.

Given the hassle involved in filing you taxes, you might want to reconsider your employment next summer. The loss you will likely claim on paper hints at the reality that you really didn’t earn much once you consider both the cost of gas and the wear and tear on your car.

Thank You i will file then :)
