FAFSA unaccompanied confusion

My current situation has left me confused as to what to put for the fafsa. I live with my aunt and uncle who aren't my legal guardians, which would make me unaccompanied technically. My mom is currently in prison and I have no idea where my father is, no contact with him in several years, completely out of the picture. I read that an incarcerated parent could qualify under special circumstances as an independent, but I'm not completely self supportive. My aunt and uncle provide me with housing and food and necessities but can't help with college. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

You are not unaccompanied as you live with your Aunt and Uncle. But you may be able to ask the school for a special circumstances adjustment where they can over ride the dependency status and make you independent for FFSA.

Your Aunt and Uncle’s financial information is not considered by FAFSA.

thanks for the quick reply. So when I fill out the fafsa, leave all the parent stuff blank?
and when I ask for the special circumstance override, what kind of information or proof would they likely need to justify me being independent?

It would be best to ask them. Good luck.
