Okay, so SFA has been zero help to me over the past few weeks. My FAFSA application was selected for verification and I’ve been unable to complete it. My parents are undocumented, so they don’t have a SSN. They’re self-employed but can’t attest to having any income because the business finances are on my sister’s name. And since they can’t claim to have a source of income, they can’t obtain an ITIN. I’m really out of options and not receiving financial aid isn’t really an option for me.
UF told me to speak to a financial adviser, but that wasn’t really helpful. Also, does anyone know if I won’t receive Bright Futures because of this, even though you don’t need to have filled out the FAFSA for it?
Checking for clarity: your parents run a business but can’t show how they pay their bills because they’re keeping all the money in your sister’s name? If you don’t submit the paperwork the school wants you won’t get aid. Did your sister go to college? If so, how did she pay?
Essentially, yes. My sister never went to college.
Your parent can fill out their FAFSA sections without a SSN, but one parent must print out the forms, use 000-00-0000 for the SSN and sign it and send it to the school. They need to put in all the correct information like how much in income, in assets. You need to figure out how much they make even if it isn’t reported.
If you put in that they make $0, the next thing that happens is they be asked how they pay for rent, food, etc. For some people, the answer to that is that they are supported by family but it sounds like in your case they actually do earn money (cash?)
You should be okay for BF. It is not based on income or assets of the family.
