yes. any form of scholarships usually require the fafsa even if Merit. thats what I have heard. although, I am not an expert so dont quote me wrong.

Any loans or scholarships require FAFSA. File it once and then update it every year. You don't have to get a loan but when you really need a loan, having an updated fafsa, will make the process easlier.

In other words, its a free option. Pass it up at YOUR risk. The lenders don't care if you don't need $$ but will require it when you do.

I wish they teach REAL money management in HS rather than people learn it the hard way.

For merit scholarships, you don't need to file a fafsa. But, it is recommended to file one at least the first year to see if you are qualified for any type of financial aid.

As for athletic scholarships, I am thinking no but not as sure. The fafsa can qualify you for loans, grants, work study, etc.

Ok, thanks for the info. is anyone really sure though. I know you can file in order to be safe. But is it required. If I don't file will i lose my merit aid?

This is not always true. many colleges require FAFSA forms for merit aid consideration too. DS's university requires the FAFSA AND the Profile freshman year for consideration for any kind of aid. For MERIT renewals, the FAFSA is REQUIRED. If you don't file the FAFSA you will NOT have your merit aid renewed. Period. It is absolutely essential that you check with the finaid office at YOUR college to find out what forms are required AND the deadlines for filing those forms. Fill out the required forms and submit them on time.
