My mom's been unemployed and had no income for all of 2010 She is not married, and I'm her dependent. She does not plan on filing a income tax return, because she had no income from working in 2010. Her boyfreind helps her to pay rent.
if I get requested to verify family income (which I did for my incoming year to college), what would I do since she will not fill out it for 2010?
I don't know how to approach in this situation.

Did she receive unemployment and if so were taxes withheld? Did you receive other assistance from the government or social agencies? Who paid for household expenses like food transportation and utilities? The best thing your mom can do is to make sure she has that type of documentation about who paid what and to fill our the FAFSA truthfully. About a third of FAFSA’s are verified and those might be the types of questions that are asked.

I used to work at a school with a high population of students whose parents had no income. If you are selected for verification, your mom will be asked to complete a form listing any income or sources of aid (WIC, TANF, subsidized housing, etc). If everything is 0, she will need to explain how her family’s basic needs are met … she will simply explain (she can say her boyfriend pays $x per month toward her rent). Don’t worry, it will be relatively painless.

OP, you are referring to 2010. Information from that year is essentially not relevant to upcoming year’s FAFSA. The questions will be about 2011. Any income for this year?
