Hello,

I am currently taking General Physics 1 and I am not doing too well in the course; I have the possibility of getting a D+ or even failing (which is a complete no no for medical school). I feel like if I take the course another semester I can defiantly work harder and do better. Is it better to fail the course and then retake the next semester and get an A, or be stuck with a D+?

I am even willing to explain to admissions why I did not do so well the first time around, and how I learned from that experience and improved the second time.

I wanted to drop the class and retake it but I missed the deadline to do so.

You don’t have a choice of about retaking.

You must retake physics because for med school admission purposes any grade below a C is considered failing.

For allopathic admissions (AMCAS), you are required to report both grades (even if your college replaces the D+/F with a newer passing grade on your transcript). Both will be used to calculate both your GPA and your sGPA.

For osteopathic admissions (AACOMAS), only the newer grade will be included in GPA calclations, although you must report both.

As for your excuse/explanation–don’t bother. Med school adcomms aren’t interested in excuses.

Thank you, I know I have to retake it, and I must do better next time.

Since an F is a 0.0 and a D+ is generally a 1.3, the D+ is definitely better.

I have to repeat my self. Can you negotiate a W?

At my school you can get an F retake the class and if you get above a C then the new grade replaces the failing grade and does not affect the GPA. Also, I plan on applying to D.O medical schools.

@artloversplus the deadline to receive a W was last month.

I knew you have passed the deadline. I ask you to “negotiate” or " beg" the prof. to change it to a W or I.

An F you can replace in your school, but not for amcas. It will severely hamper your chances. DO schools maybe, but you better get an A on the second try.

I’ll try to negotiate with my professor, and if not then I better get an A next semester.
