patsquee -yes, EA round…

Congrats dory123 and Redhawkmom! We only applied to 3 schools since she knew she wanted UNCW or NCSU…we just have to wait until around Jan 30th for her NC State decision. If she also gets in NCSU I know it will be a very hard choice for her.
dory123…what was your daughters other top choice?

Thanks NCMom. My son is now waiting for his other top choice - Appalachian State. Since you are from NC any insight as to which is better choice? He is going to be a business major but not sure what specific major within business yet.

Redhawkmom: App State is also a great school…it just really depends on the scenery your son wants! UNCW is 5 mins from the beach and my daughter fell in love with the campus because it is on the smaller side. Seeing students ride their bikes to class or skateboard had that laid back feeling she wanted. The campus was beautiful and they just put some major money in the student center renovations and when we visited in the Spring they were finishing up an huge outdoor recreational pool. She is going for Pre-Vet Marine Bio but The Cameron School of Business at UNCW has a good rep. A collegue of mine at work graduated from there and got a few job offers right out of college with a pretty decent salary. App State is in the mountains…also beautiful but very different. They also have a football team, where UNCW doesn’t so I am not sure if that is a factor. Hope this helps! Good luck :)

NCMom - My daughter is also interested in marine biology so her top choices are UNCW and Eckerd College (very small LAC in St. Petersburg, FL). Both schools have a lot to offer, but I think that unless she gets into the Honors College at UNCW, it’s likely she’ll end up at Eckerd for the smaller, more personalized environment. Eckerd also has the advantage of allowing her to start right up in Marine Science the first year and to get involved in research right away. She also got a very nice merit scholarship from Eckerd, and it’s very unlikely she’ll be eligible for anything much as an OOS student an UNCW. On the other hand, as a larger school, UNCW has a bit more social variety and the base price is considerably less than Eckerd. It’s also very beautiful in NC (as you’re well aware!) and the campus is lovely. Like I said - tough decision. We’ll probably visit each of them once more and then decide.

I’m a veterinarian - Michigan State grad (long ago!). Does your daughter want to do aquatic medicine?

dory123- I have actually heard of Eckerd and they do have a great program! My daughter actually wants to be a veterinarian as well! UNCW has a pre-vet option with Marine Bio so it works out perfect. She is also applying for the Honors College. It doesn’t look like the application is that bad and the housing is beautiful…very new and modern. NC State of course is the flagship University for Animal Science but she is thinking that she will most likely go there for her DVM so she wants to go somewhere smaller and the new research marine bio labs at UNCW are amazing. They also have a big study abroad program and her father lives in England (which they have a great exchange program with) so it would be great for her to have him there for support when she goes. She currently works at a Vet after school and in NC they have Honors Animal and Marine Science classes in High School and she loved all of them. Next semester she is actually student teaching a freshman Animal Science class with her teacher for credit…her teacher said she knows more about small animals than she does! lol Keep me posted on what she decides, I am sure if she goes to UNCW they will end up in many classes together!

NCMom - My daughter and I both loved the school and the area when we visited. We hope to get back for another look in Jan or Feb, which should help in making the decision. Best of luck to your D daughter with NC State, too - it’s nice to have choices… Having done the big school thing myself, I have to agree, though, that smaller has a lot to recommend it. UNCW seems to be in a nice range - enough students to give some variety to the social life, but not so huge that you feel like a speck in the universe! Keep us posted as the decision-making process moves forward…!
