Fall 2019 CMU Transfer Thread

Rejected!
from March 30th applied to ECE school.
undergrad GPA 3.95 good luck yall!

@BatmanRISENIMY ECE is brutal, them and SCS sometimes only accepts a few students and sometimes none at all. Good luck with all your other schools!

@BatmanRISENIMY ECE is pretty much impossible. They don’t even accept internal transfers since the major is filled already and there are a bunch of non-ECE CIT kids looking to transfer. From what my advisor said SCS might be easier to transfer in than ECE. Good luck with your other schools

@transferrrrrrcc @ccrise2
Haha did not realize after I submit the application but was worth a shot! Good luck to you guys too!
:smile:

Just got an email saying decision was posted in the portal… rejected

@transferjunkie what school/major were you applying for?

@Hopefull2013 Biological Sciences

Did anyone get something different than this in their rejection letter:
"Thank you for the opportunity to consider your application for admission as a transfer student to the class
entering in Fall 2019. Our admission committee has carefully reviewed your application and supporting
credentials and despite your fine record and accomplishments, we are unable to offer you a place in the
Mellon College of Science. "

Does anyone know when will Dietrich college release decision?

@TimJ00 I don’t think they release by college?
someone please correct me if I’m wrong though.

Is anyone here an engineering major?

Rejected on March 30 to Dietrich for Statistics and Data Science.

I’m guessing they rejected close to all community college students because they don’t think CC is rigorous enough.

"Our admission committee has carefully reviewed your application and supportingcredentials and despite your fine record and accomplishments, we are unable to offer you a place in the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Please do not consider this to be a reflection of your academic ability but rather an indication of theoverwhelmingly large applicant pool and our inability to offer admission to every qualified applicant. We are disappointed we could not accept more of the outstanding candidates who applied to Carnegie Mellon this year. We hope you understand the difficulty in selecting such a small number from the many qualified applicants in this year’s applicant pool."

@CollegeIsBigOof sorry to hear that you didn’t get in.
Can you tell me where did you see the decision? was it in place of the admission checklist?

Gosh, so many qualified people are getting rejected that I keep checking my portal just to make sure I didn’t accidentally miss my rejection too! Good luck to everyone still left, I hope we get in!

Thank you!

One thing important to mention about CMU is that you should not apply to transfer with the expectation of being admitted even if your stats are strong on paper - this is particularly true if you are intended Business, STEM, or other fields where CMU is well known for being quite strong.

In particular, CMU’s priorities are almost entirely focused on their freshman class. As noted on the admissions packet, CMU only admits students where space is available, i.e. due to someone leaving the program for whatever reason.

Thus from where I stand, and I admit this is partially speculation, it appears that admissions seems to target students who current go to a moderately ranked university with potential to succeed in a more challenging environment. Based on conversation with admissions officers, they are unlikely to accept CC students because CCs lack rigor and you have to take extra initiative to prove you are capable of handling advanced coursework; simultaneously, they are unlikely to accept students who attend a school that is reasonably strong because those students likely already have an environment where they can succeed and the resources are (broadly speaking) better given to those who have fewer opportunities.

Beyond this, from their admissions process (and the habits of other universities with similar admissions habits) is also likely to admit students from particularly non-traditional backgrounds who can somehow demonstrate their potential.

Yeah, it is rough. I didn’t even want to apply to CMU at first because I knew it was such a lottery. CMU is nearly impossible to get in, just because they really REALLY do not care about transfers.

What you said about them not accepting students from big name schools and CCs totally makes sense. With only 5 (or whatever insanely low number) spots available, the decision becomes cutthroat and even more competitive than we can imagine. I wonder what they look at specifically when they review our applications, what allowed people to get past the first round or thrown out immediately. It only makes sense they choose the most unique people, or sometimes none at all.

When do we start to get the decisions? are they rolling? I knew someone who transferred last year got her decision during mid-May.

i honestly don’t think anyone knows when

even them
