If you correct the fafsa after the march 2nd deadline does USC consider it late?

I sent in estimates in February but I am planning on correcting it this weekend since we just filed our taxes. I don’t want to do that though if it will screw things up and make it late.

We sent in FAFSA and CSS with numbers from 2008 Tax Returns, but after we filed 2009’s, we noticed the numbers (income, etc) are slightly different. Should I still correct the FAFSA, or does USC automatically do it with the copy of 2009 I sent in?

When you filed using 2008 numbers, you should have answered the question about whether you had filed 2009 taxes yet as “will file.” Now you go back in with the 2009 numbers and enter them correctly and change that question to “already filed.”

So yes, you should go in and do the corrections.

I don’t think I have mentioned yet that schools can and do make corrections to FAFSAs when there are discrepancies, so you may receive an email saying your FAFSA has been changed. It won’t tell you which school did it, and the only way to figure out what the change was is to go in and look at it line-by-line. All schools you submitted the FAFSA to will receive the school change. It is much easier and less worriesome to do the change yourself.

alamemom and anyone that knows the answer… thanks in advance !

My D received her financial aid package …

Uni scholarship $4000
Uni grant $10 028
Federal work study $2500
Federal direct subsidized $3500
Federal direct unsubsidized $2000

total aid $22 028

EFC is 55 728 - 22 028 = 33 700

Question : Will they take away the University grant and University Scholarship and replace it with NMF presidential scholarship OR are they adding the another layer on top of it ?

They will not take away the University Scholarship - that is a merit award. Yes, the university grant will most likely be replaced by your NMF Presidential Scholarship. You may be able to keep the w/s and subs loan if your FAFSA EFC is less than about $30,000. If your FAFSA EFC is greater than $30,000, the work study *might *be replaced and the subs part of the Stafford might become unsubs. (This is because the Stafford and Federal work/study awards are disbursed using only the FAFSA information.) In any case, your NMF Pres + Univ Scholarship = ~$24,000, which is more “free money” than in your original package.

Congratulations on the NMF + University Scholarship!

Edit: ^Just checked on your FAFSA EFC. It is likely you will keep the subs Stafford and possibly the w/s.

alamemon… thank you so much for answering my questions.

I agree with you though i was hoping that they will not take away the uni grant.
It looks like getting a presidential or not doesn’t make a diff if one’s EFC is around $25000. Looks like the presidential award is bogus if your family make some decent income.
Well, i was hoping to at least pay in between $15000 ++ since D has already been awarded a full rider in University of Washington…

I am sorry that you consider one of the most prestigious scholarships at USC to be “bogus.”

USC is a need-blind school, so they did not consider your daughter’s need when they considered her for admission and scholarships. There are many need-aware schools where having a need of more than $30,000 would have been a negative in terms of admission.

Many students with financial need find USC’s need-blind policy and generous financial aid to be one of the many wonderful things about USC, not “bogus.”

Would the scholarship be more meaningful to you if USC was a school that did not provide excellent financial aid? That simply does not make sense to me.

i am sorry but that’s how i felt . Maybe i shouldn’t have used the word “bogus”…but i was kinda of dissappointed it didn’t make much diff with w or wo scholarship…in this case $10 000 only

The scholarships offered to your daughter over four years amount to approximately $100,000 of USC’s own money from members of the Trojan Family. I agree with you that you shouldn’t call their generosity to your daughter “bogus.”

Merit aid is not added to need-based aid in excess of your FAFSA EFC. That is a Federal Financial aid policy, and you will find that policy at all colleges and universities that distribute Federal funds as part of their financial aid packages.

The way scholarships are handled is explained on page one of THIS thread, and this thread has been up since December.

Hi nourmom! I didn’t see your question until just now!

Yes, your first-year financial aid package will just be for the Spring semester, so all amounts will be half what they would be for a full year.
