FAQ for USC Financial Aid

haha! My own children have do doubt about the LAME part!

Thanks guys!

^ ohhh that’s how you say it! like randy1991, i’ve always thought it was “ala memom” but now i see it’s “a lame mom” hahaha. but yes i agree with the others; you’re one of the most helpful members on the USC forum :)

awwww - I am feeling less “lame” every minute!

Hi. I’ve been struggling for the past week on how the heck to upload my financial aid documents on USConnect and I emailed them and they just said to fax in my parent’s tax returns and w-2’s with my own cover sheets.

I’m assuming there’s some sort of cover sheet available online but I cannot get to it. I can’t even get to the My FinAid & Documents so if anyone could perhaps link me or upload the cover sheets, that would be much appreciated. I’m already behind the deadline! =/

aaaccc,

Sign on to your SC connect page (portal).

Click on Financial Aid.

Click on Library tab.

Click on the appropriate forms you need and then print them.

If that doesn’t work, try this link. https://esdweb.esd.usc.edu/DMS/DocCheckList.aspx?Expand=FALSE</a></p>

By the way, the notice I got from them said they prefer to have them faxed and not uploaded by computer. When you fax them, be certain you put the leader sheet in front and their closing sheet in back. Put your fax on high quality, or fine print. Within 1/2 hour you will receive an email saying they have the tax returns/w-2’s. But they will remain as “Pending” for along time. I did mine a while ago and they still show as pending, their website says that is normal.

Best of luck.

aaaccc,

Can you get to the part that tells you which documents are needed from you and which documents they already have? If you can, you’ll need to click on the documents still needed, which should take you to a page that lets you either upload the files or fax them in. Since you plan on faxing them, bubble that option and click next. There should be a button that lets you print out the cover sheets for that document. Also, the cover sheets will have your individual applicant info (USC ID, etc.) and your own barcodes for that specific document so they cannot be exchanged between people.

Here’s the link that will have USC’s directions for going about this if you’re still confused:

Anyone knows the date we will get "My 2010-2011 Awards/Award Information?

New students: April?
Transfer students: 2 or 3 weeks after acceptance? and
Continuing students: (?)

Thanks.

Yes, new admitees, usually the end of the first week in April, and transfers a week or two after admission.

dt123 gave an excellent answer for returning students in post #51. I think it was mid or late June last year.

Read post 51…thanks: “Returning students also get their aid awards in the summer.”
Kind of late…I will say! I wish it could be earlier. With more than one kid in college it is prudent to analyze financial issues…

I agree, Greenery. Unlike that first year when your kids have several options, returning students have nowhere else to go if it just isn’t enough. Remember the loan totals go up $1,000 from frosh-soph, and another $1,000 soph to junior year, and work/study may increase a bit, too - they figure upperclassmen can work a bit more and still keep up with their studies. If everything FAFSA-CSS/Profile-wise stays the same, expect the USC need-based grant to go down about $2,000 - $3,000 when your student becomes an upperclassmen. (These changes are standard at all universities, not just USC.)

Well, we will have to wait.
All of this is new for me…thanks for the information.
“Avaluablemom” should be your name.

:) Thanks!

P.S. Though I sound very calm about it all on this thread, I get worried every year as we wait for the package!

Hi alamemom! I have a question for you since you seem to be very knowledgeable about USC and financial aid. :)

I filed the FAFSA, CSS Profile, Cal Grant, and had them sent to USC before all the deadlines.

However, when I was looking at my application today, I browsed the financial aid section and read that I had to send in physical copies of the tax forms to USC by March 2. I didn’t do that! I sent them this afternoon by fax. Now I know that the aid packages and decisions are sent separately, but if I get accepted, does that mean I won’t be receiving aid? I DID electronically send in the data on time (and the actual taxes, not estimates)- just not the physical copies of the forms. Or does it mean I will just receive the financial aid package late (IF I get accepted)? I’m really freaking about this right now. :(

No need to freak out - you are fine! The most important part is that you had your FAFSA and CSS/Profile in by the deadline - so you are an on-time applicant for financial aid. The due date for the copies of tax returns is

Your financial aid package should be available to you before the May 1st deadline to submit your deposit. Believe me, you are way ahead of many applicants who won’t notice they have to send in tax returns until mid-April. Those are the ones who will receive late packages. Good luck!

I’m really relieved right now. :)

Thank you so much!

Just one more question though-

I uploaded the Student Non-filing tax form online and sent in the tax forms by fax, but when I go to check the document status on USConnect, both are still listed under Required and not below Pending. I received 2 emails saying that they were sent successfully to USC, but they still haven’t changed.

As long as you got the emails saying they were recieved, they are there. They ask that you wait two weeks after submitting before you call to ask if they were received. The last document we submitted took exactly two weeks to appear.

It sounds like you have everything in order - good job!

hello-- i actually have kind of a dumb question…but it’s really confusing me, so here goes:

which parts of the tax return do i fax? my parents filed electronically and i already sent that in online…but that didnt have their actual signatures on it. and for some reason i couldn’t attach the w-2s. so now do i fax a seperate copy of the signed returns with all schedules and w-2s? or should i just send in the w-2s? if someone could tell me specifically what to fax, it would be greatly appreciated

The instructions are to send in all pages of the tax return, all schedules, and the W-2s. Check to be sure that when you submitted them to USC online that all schedules were included.

Yes, FAX the W-2s, and be sure your USC ID number is on it. As for the signature, print the tax return, have your parents sign it, and also FAX that in. If you have already submitted the schedules online there should be no reason to send them again. Again, be sure your USC ID number is on all pages you submit.

If anyone has received reliable information from USC Financial aid saying that electronically submitted tax returns (that do not have a physical signature) do not need to be printed, signed and FAXed, please let us know - it will save some steps for applicants - Thanks!

thanks a lot!

This question will be coming up in a few weeks when the financial aid packages come out. I saw a great post on the subject by 'rentof2 today on the financial aid forum, so I thought I would copy it here.

- If another school offered me more money than USC, can I use that offer to bargain for more money from USC?
