Fasfa parents are separated

my parents are separated but they did their taxes together for 2016. On fasfa I said they were together because I thought was suppose to. Can I go back to change it and put that they are separated ? For 2017 they did their taxes separated. They do not live together

I think you will have to speak to your college(s) about how to make the change. Not sure you can do this yourself
@Kelsmom especially if you used the IRS DRT the first time.

You will need documentation of your parent separation. Separate lease agreement or mortgage, something that really proves your parents are separated.

I don’t think you’ll need documentation that they are separated, but you (the FAFSA ID parent) will need to separate that income using W2s, 1099s, etc to show who the income belongs to.

You should have reported the assets of the parent you live with most of the time as of the date of the filing.

@twoinanddone

This student needs to change the FAFSA from married with the full income to separated. My gut feeling…he will be selected for verification because the income will change…and the school will want to be sure the parents ARE actually separated…and not just claiming so to get more aid.

Whenever I was verified, I was not asked for rental agreements or other proof of my status. Tax forms worked. Maybe they will, but I don’t think it is uncommon for students to be confused the marital status of the parents is of the date of filing while the marital status of a tax form filed more than a year ago may not be the same.

Maybe they will, but I think they usually believe the students and allow the correction.
