Hey guys I have to fill out a verification form (Non-Filer Statement Independent Student) for RU. I am twenty four and independent because of age, I live with my grandparents they don't help me with anything school related. On the fasfa i tried to put 3 people per home but error came up. On the form it says put everyone you live with on the forum, will this ruin my financial aid? Also what should I place on the forum you guys think?

Since you are 24 you are considered independent for FAFSA.

On the FAFSA under household size you just put 1, not 3.

On the verification form you just list yourself also.

alright thanks yeah i didnt want to get in trouble with the law ha

On the form it says put everyone you live with on the forum,

I don’t think it’s worded quite that way. It says to list those who are in your household and “household” is defined in a certain way. It doesn’t mean including literally everyone who lives under your roof. If you had a boyfriend living there, you wouldn’t count him. You’re independent, you don’t support your Grands, you don’t count them.

This student is a household of ONE. His grandparents are providing him with lodging. Sort of like renting a room from someone in their house.

^^
True. I think the student got confused about listing household members.

If dependent, then the household members are the people that the parent(s) are providing more than 50% of their support (usually children).

If independent, then the household members would be a spouse or children that the student (and spouse) is/are supporting.

In this case, the student isn’t supporting anyone but him/herself, so as Thumper says, a household of one.

For dependent students…under parent household size, they include parents plus any kiddos they are supporting…not just the kiddos! Just clarifying.

^^

Oh yes. I should have made that more clear. Of course, the parents are included as being in the household when the student is dependent. :)
