Another school to consider is the Fashion Institute of Technology – FIT – in NY City. (FWIW a great location in Chelsea neighborhood.) Here is a list of undergraduate programs, which include, among others, marketing and advertising related to fashion: https://www.fitnyc.edu/academics/undergraduate-programs.php
I know one student who is attending there now (for masters degree). She’s an established illustrator (with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) but wants to broaden her skills and to understand fashion and fabrics better as well as marketing.
FIT was my first thought also. I have a friend who teaches for them and 2 other friends who attended. Post graduation connections are important so if I had a kid interested in this field I would find the best possible place for post college job entry. You can work your way up in retail even now to a decent salary wage with a college degree but it would be nice not to start at the very bottom although I know a few 30 year olds for whom awful hours and low wages are now in the rear view window.
Thank again…we will definitely look at FIT. She’s never been a big NYC girl, part of the reason this whole major seems out of left field for me! She has a friend whose mom is pretty connected in the NYC fashion world, so she is going to start there, picking her brain.
Kent state also may give her money. I know a kid that went there for fashion and told us she got a lot of merit money, making it much more affordable than FIT or other private schools.
I’d say FIT too…there is a girl in my son’s class who is going there…
A girl in my daughter’s group of friends went to FIDM (fashion institute of design and merchandising) in LA (we are in Orange County), I don’t know much about it, but this girl was interested in fashion.
My daughter has fallen out of touch with her, so I don’t know what she ended up doing after she left FIDM…but if your D is interested in fashion merchandising and going to school on the west coast…FIDM may be worth looking into…
Drexel definitely has a merchandising major in its program. I think it’s called Design and Merchandising, and students can concentrate on fashion within it. A neighbor’s daughter did that. She ultimately got a decent job in the industry, too, but it wasn’t easy.
Gotta say: (i) I think Dallesandro’s is overrated for cheesesteaks (although nowhere near as overrated as Geno’s or Pat’s, at least among tourists – they aren’t really overrated among locals, who tend to avoid them). It’s also a pretty long haul from the Jefferson University East Falls campus (nee Philadelphia Textile School, then Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science, then Philadelphia University). (ii) I agree wholeheartedly with Dolemite re roast pork. With broccoli rabe and sharp provolone. That’s the real Philly jawn!
