Father of Victim Warns Parents

I just read that the father of the murdered Indian engineer who was in the US on a work visa warned parents in India to please not send their children to study in the US or send them to work here. He said that the US has changed and is no longer welcoming to immigrants or foreigners. The murder was in a suburb of Kansas City. BTW, my husband works in high tech all over the US (in fact he worked in KC area last year) and he says the fear is palpable amongst his co workers. Workers in high tech who are immigrants, on a work visa and even those born here. Those that are of dark skin. Some were considering going back to their countries or in some cases even US born workers going to their families country of origin.

The perpetrator shouted"Get out of my country" before shooting and injured another Indian engineer and a white patron who was trying to help.

I had also been reading that college admissions offices were getting more calls from international parents wondering if it was safe to send their students here. I’m not sure if this will or has already started to impact college application numbers from international students.

This is getting scary. The current xenophobia in our country is getting worse.

My middle eastern friend at work one day politely mentioned “I saw a statistic that over 61% of married white women voted for Trump” and just looked at me. She was too polite to say anything else, but the fear and suspicion in her eyes totally unsettled me. I sometimes wonder how minorities perceive me after the election, Are they wondering if I silently hate them?

Sad. My Berkeley sophomore went to the Rockies over winter break with the Cal ski club. On their return trip, they had a mandatory bus driver break in Utah. As she and her friends (white kids all) were milling about on a sidewalk in their Berkeley gear, a truck driver approached and asked if they were from Berkeley. After they affirmed the fact, he told them that they better watch themselves because they were in Trump country. She doesn’t know if it was a threat or a warning, but either way it disturbed her.

Right now, it looks like there will be fewer international tourists coming to the US – and fewer international students applying to US colleges.

My company has some outreach some clinics along the Texas border and the staff have reported that fewer patients are showing up for their appointments.

Meanwhile, some people posting on these forums seem to find it hard to believe that non-white Americans in California (where 72% of recent high school graduating classes are non-white, many visibly members of a group targeted by a “textbook definition of a racist comment”) may hesitate before going to college in some other parts of the country due to fears of increased racism.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: Please remember to avoid political comments. I deleted a few posts.

Are you referring to me? I’m not white and have no concerns of sending my daughter to anywhere in the US for college. This coming from someone that experienced racism directly while growing up in super white Greenwich Connecticut.

I’m actually more concerned with schools out here. I had to be worried for my son during the shooting that occurred at UDub and reading about the riots at UCs. I

I have told both of my children to not attend any type of political speech and to avoid campus if one is taking place.

Not you. But surely you understand the hesitation, even if you do not agree with it.

I do understand and I don’t blame anyone for it. It is a shame for either side to close off great choices due to fear.

As a South Asian with South Asian and Middle Eastern friends, I definitely feel the effects of the post-election, racially-motivated hysteria. Nowadays, if you look at the comments section of an article with even the slightest mention of a person of color (especially an African American, Hispanic or Middle Eastern individual) the comments section is riddled with prejudice.

You may have heard the recent story about Timothy Caughman, a homeless African American who was killed by white supremacist James Jackson who had traveled to New York to kill innocent black men. Some of the people in the comments section of articles about this incident were saying that James Jackson’s actions were in response to how African Americans have allegedly been acting. To put it simply, people were excusing a murderer for killing an innocent man because the victim was African American. Even more horrifying were the people who were applauding Jackson’s actions.

Another article was about a Hispanic family, and the journalist clearly stated that they are U.S. citizens. Still, multiple people in the comments were calling to “deport them”. Yet another article talked about how Cadbury had halal certification (this was later revealed as a hoax) and people went into a frenzy on Twitter, claiming that they wouldn’t purchase from a company that allegedly supported Islam. The thing is, Cadbury’s products are automatically halal, because they contain no meat.

The story about the Indian engineer saddens me because after Trump’s election my Muslim and Latino friends were uneasy and although I worried for them I didn’t feel the need to worry with them, but now the racial tensions have risen so high in this country that I’m beginning to feel fear myself.

I believe that after the election racists and their ilk have felt far more comfortable expressing their archaic opinions and acting upon them.

Edit: I’m not trying to generalize the president or any of his supporters. Like with any large group of people, there are extremists, but those extremists are not reflective of the entire group.

@MaineLonghorn I believe that my comment was deleted, and I’m unsure why. I clarified that it wasn’t reflective of a political party in an edit. If I edited it further to make it less pointed, could I possibly repost it? Thanks in advance for whatever reply you send me.
