<p>i just finished reading Dreams From My Father by Barack Obama--highly recommend</p>
<p>Hmm, not an acceptee, but I still am from the Stanford area (lived there for 14 years) and spent 9 weeks total living on campus. Really wanna go there. So here's some real California music taste for those who are attending "the world's biggest Mexican restaurant" AKA "the Farm":</p>
<p>Book: I can only think of one. I was sitting in a cafe in NC, and a born-and-raised Southerner said to me, "That's such a Californian thing to read." Basic Writings of Existentialism, edited by Gordon Marino.</p>
<p>Bands: The Bay Area (Stanford Area) has brought up some GREAT bands. Try them--do not focus on what comes to mind when you hear the name. Try the music. AFI (a new punk band, very well known and high on the charts), Jefferson Airplane, Metallica (some of their songs, such as "Nothing Else Matters," are playable on Easy Listening radio; others such as "Master of Puppets" are less accessible but still absolute greats.), Green Day, Grateful Dead, Third Eye Blind, Papa Roach, Deftones (the last two are a little more hard rock, Deftones certainly so), Counting Crows, the list goes on.</p>
