Favorite Colleges & Universities in the Northwest

I would appreciate recommendations/opinions on the Colleges & Universities of the Northwest region of the United States. I'm trying to assist my neice in the college search process and am not familiar with this region. Thanks!

You are going to have to be WAY more specific.

What is her GPA?
What is her courseload like? (APs? IBs? etc…)
Has she done her SAT/SAT II/ACT?
What is her intended major(s)?
Are there any financial restrictions?
What type of environment does she want, rural or urban?

I want to keep it very broad at this point in time. Get her on to a variety of campuses (large/small, urban/rural, etc). Strong student…but not Ivy Material. Undecided major at this point in time. Extremely strong community service. Schools with Merit Aid/Community Service Scholarship opportunties will be a plus. Probably will not qualify for very much financial aid. Does this help? I’m just looking for a starting point. She wants me to teach her how to evaluate the information that is out there. The opinions from CC have were extremely helpful when my twins went through this process. I’d appreciate general recommendations for further exploration. I realize that different school excel in different areas.

I was surprised by the overall low average of stats of science and engineering students in Washington, Oregon or Idaho. I kept looking for those highly or most competitive schools - there are not any. Do smart kids leave the Northwest?

Washington State:
-The Evergreen State College
-Gonzaga University
-Seattle University
-University of Puget Sound
-University of Washington
-Washington State University
-Whitman College

Oregon
-Lewis & Clark College
-Reed College
-University of Oregon
-Willamette University

Idaho
-The College of Idaho
University of Idaho

Montana
-Montana Tech of the University of Montana
-The University of Montana - Missoula

Wyoming
-University of Wyoming

I didn’t know which states you mean by “Northwest”

I have been to the U of Wyoming and wouldn’t recommend it. I hope you like living in the middle of no where. I went in the summer and it was so dry, worse than Florida’s humidity. I would personally suggest Reed and Lewis and Clark in Oregon and Evergreen State in WA.

Thank you for your recommendations. Niece lives outside of Portland, OR. We are beginning by researching schools within approx. 6 hours from home. Then, perhaps she ill cast the net a bit farther.

out of the colleges I’d highly recommend the following:

-The Evergreen State College
-Gonzaga University
-Seattle University
-University of Puget Sound
-University of Washington
-Whitman College
-Lewis & Clark College
-Reed College

pierre0913: are you from the area? did you visit or seriously consider any of the institutions you recommend? Thanks!

no I’m not from the area but over the last 3 years of high school I have considered Whitman, Seattle, Washington, and Reed (I’ve looked closely into these schools)

Thanks pierre0913, you have given us a good starting point. Best of luck to you!

I would check out http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/560633-pacific-northwest-roadtrip.html</a> Lots of input. Better than relying on the comments of only one person.

Bill Gates and Paul Allen come to mind … :D

UW-Seattle has one of the best med schools around so I’m pretty sure their stats are quite high.

Pacific Lutheran University is a great, very supportive school, known for having the happiest students around. Lots of merit aid, and community service opportunities, and the list price is a little less than competing schools.

I agree University of Washington, Seattle University, Washington State and Oregon State are some of the best engineering schools in the country

also the location in Seattle for Seattle U and UWashington is great for internships with companies like Boeing, Amazon and Microsoft (though not sure with current state of economy)

University of Washington- Seattle, actually one of my favorite universities on the west coast also.

I have a crush on the University of Washington and Seattle University

actually I love Seattle in general, in my opinion one of the best and underrated cities in the country.

I hope the OP likes rain if he/she goes to Washington State.

well there is a lot of rain on the coast but inland (somewhere like where Whitman College is), they barely get any rain

Does Evergreen State? I know Seattle get a lot though. I am use to the east coast weather. In Florida it rains a lot, but goes on and off. If it rains in Georgia it will rain all day.
